Accounting rules always stay the same across books, yet content can vary – The book I am using this year teaches perpetual inventory very badly You do not have to recreate content for different classes and different schools Can use the content for extra income TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO2

Online services where you can create a class and enroll students – Udemy is one such service, there are many others You can create a subscription web page If you create videos, you can create your own YouTube channel – You can monetize your videos – More on this later In any case, be careful about using copyrighted material for commercial purposes TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO3

5 Camtasia Software Easy to start using the software by narrating PowerPoint slides – When you install Camtasia, there is an option to install the PowerPoint add-in – If this option is installed, click the Add-Ins tab in PowerPoint and click Record to begin narrating TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO5

6 Camtasia – More Advanced Any application, video, picture, documents, etc can be narrated using Camtasia – As long as it is on the screen, you can record the steps you take while you narrate – You can have a picture- in-picture of yourself using a web cam, or just turn the web cam off TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO6

8 Tools for Creating Content Screenshots are a great way to communicate information that you already have on your computer – You can use a series of screenshots to demonstrate a process or to insert a particular formula or picture into your document I used screenshots to create the content for this presentation TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO8

9 Screenshots Several ways to do screenshots – In Microsoft Office applications, click the Insert tab – There should be an icon for screenshot – With a screenshot, there should be options for available windows or custom screen clipping PowerPoint Word TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO9

10 Screenshots Using the Keyboard On the keyboard, there is a Print Screen key that is usually found above the numeric keypad – Pressing the Print Screen key takes a picture or your entire screen and copies it to the clipboard – Pressing the Alt key at the same time as the Print Screen key takes a picture of the active window and copies it to the clipboard You can then click Paste to put the image into any Microsoft Office application and use the cropping and editing tools of that application TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO10

12 Why Use YouTube or Personal Web Page Most important reason – you maintain ownership of your materials – Materials posted to Blackboard or Moodle are technically owned by the institution Many schools require materials posted to school sites be ADA compliant Many learning management systems have size limits (Moodle limits uploads to 5 meg or less) TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO12

14 Personal Web Page Basics Creating your own web page is not difficult – It takes planning and organization The first thing you need to do is figure out in a general way how you want the web page to look – Would you like a picture of yourself and/or a biography on the first page, or do you want to have another “about me” page TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO14

15 Personal Web Page Basics Will you be using your web page only for your class, or do you want to post other items – Examples are: presentations you have made, links to articles you have written, your resume, etc. A good basic web page design has you putting very little information on the main page Once it gets too long, think about creating another page and a link – We will learn about pages and links soon TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO15

16 Personal Web Page Basics Once you have an idea about how you want your page to work, you can begin creating your page – You can use Notepad and program it yourself using HTML – You can use web page creation software – Many hosts have web building tools – Easiest and cheapest – Microsoft Word This presentation will use Microsoft Word TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO16

17 Folders Organizing your web page will become difficult over time if you teach different classes and post a lot of information – Using folders can really help to organize your work The only important thing is that you must upload the same folder structure We will go over this later – Do not use spaces in your folder names, and keep the names short TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO17

18 Folders I use a folder called “homepage” – It is saved in the MyDocuments section of my hard drive – All pages, photographs, sound clips, and any other objects used in your web page must be saved in this folder or a subfolder – The only things you would not need to save in this folder are links to other pages on the internet TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO18

19 Main Page Open Microsoft Word Click File/Save As Make sure to name the page index – Web browsers default to the page called “index” Next to “save as type” click the down arrow and choose “web page” – Don’t click save yet TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO19

20 Main Page Click Change Title – This is what will display in the top bar in the web page The Enter Text dialog box will appear – Type the name you want to appear in the title bar of the web browser – Click OK TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO20

21 Edit Your Page The nice thing about using Word is that you can use its editing tools – You can use their colors for backgrounds (the color may not look the same on the Web) – You can easily edit the size and color of your test – You can create tables, add pictures, use the numbering tool, insert hyperlinks, etc. using Word’s graphical interface Word will create the HTML code TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO21

22 Create a Background Color Click the Page Layout tab – In the Page Background group, you can pick a background color by clicking Page Color and choosing a color – You can also create a watermark or a page border in the same group TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO22

23 Add a Title To add a title you can just begin typing – You can change the color and size of the font whenever you want You can add interest using WordArt – Click the Insert tab, and in the Text group, click the WordArt icon TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO23

24 Add a Title Click whichever WordArt style you like, then just begin typing the title of your page – Make it informative so readers know what your page is about – You can change the style, size or color any time TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO24

25 Add Your Picture and Bio Click outside of the WordArt text box Click the Insert tab – Click the down arrow under Table – Hover over the first two cells in the first row – The bar should read 2x1 table – Click the highlighted cells to insert the table TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO25

26 Add Your Picture and Bio Click inside the first cell – To add your bio, just begin to type things about yourself – Word will wrap the text within a cell, no need to hit enter – The table can always be resized later, and the text can be edited later TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO26

27 Add Your Picture and Bio To insert your picture, it is very important to first get the picture file into the homepage folder – You can use the homepage folder, or create a new folder for pictures – You must do this before you insert the link for the picture – Otherwise, your web page will not display the picture TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO27

28 Add Your Picture In the Windows Explorer window, click Documents, then homepage Click the New Folder button (or right-click and click New Folder) Name your folder Pictures (no spaces or long file names) – Hit Enter to accept TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO28

29 Add Your Picture Find the picture you want on your computer or a flash drive – Click the picture, right click, and choose Copy Open the Pictures folder you just created in the homepage folder – Click the background, right click and choose Paste TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO29

30 Add Your Picture Go back to the Word file Index – Position the cursor in the blank box – Click the Insert tab, then the Pictures icon – Use the Insert Picture box to find the picture in the homepage/Pictures folder TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO30

31 Add Your Picture It is very important that you choose the picture that is in the homepage folder, not the original location – The picture will need to be uploaded along with the Index page and other pages – If you choose the wrong picture, you will see an error message on your web page TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO31

32 Add Your Picture If you want to change the size of the picture, drag the handles on the corners in or out – Do not make the picture narrower, wider, taller or shorter The picture will look strange if you change the aspect ratio (ratio of length to width) TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO32

33 Add a Link to a Web Page You can add links to YouTube videos, online tutorials, or any other page you like – First, open your browser and find the page you are looking for – Click the address bar – Select the entire address – Right click and click Copy TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO33

35 Add a Link to a Web Page The Insert Hyperlink dialog box will appear – Click in the Address box near the bottom, right click and click Paste Click in the Text to display box near the top of the Insert Hyperlink box – Delete what is there and type what you want the hyperlink to display Click OK TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO35

37 Adding Another Page There are several reasons to add other pages – Once you have to scroll down a lot to view information, some of that information should be on another page instead – You may want to post different information for different audiences, for example links to Excel templates for your accounting students, but vacation pictures for your family You can add as many pages as you want, up to the limit of your storage TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO37

38 Adding Another Page Open a new Word file by clicking File, then New, then click Blank Document and then Create Click File, then Save As – Use a short file name with no spaces (I will call mine Principles) – In the Save as Type box, click the down arrow and click Web Page TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO38

39 Adding Another Page Make sure you save this file in the folder homepage – You can save it in the root folder, or you can create a new folder in the homepage folder for this page by clicking New Folder – I would recommend creating a new folder for this page The web page will get harder to manage over time as you create more documents and post more pages TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO39

40 Adding Another Page Click New Folder – Use short file names for your folders as well, I will use Principles – Click Open, then click Save Use the techniques we already discussed to edit this new page TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO40

41 Adding a Link to Your New Page Go back to the original Index page we created earlier – Go to the next blank line and click the Insert tab, then the Hyperlink icon in the Links group – This time we will create a link to another page, not another web page TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO41

42 Adding a Link to Your New Page In the Text to display box, type whatever you want the link to say on the Index page (I’m typing Debby’s Principles page) Under Look in make sure Current Folder is chosen Double click the folder called Principles TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO42

43 Adding a Link from Your New Page When you double click the Principles folders, you will see a folder and a file – The folder contains coding that Word uses for the web page – Click the file Principles and click OK. TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO43

44 Adding a Link from Your New Page Your index page should now have a hyperlink for the new page – To test it, hold down the control key while you click the link and the new page should open TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO44

45 Posting Files There are many things you can add to your web page – You can add documents you have created (such as this PowerPoint presentation, for example) – You can add audio or video files that you have created yourself Beware of copyright issues if you post content created by someone else, like a PowerPoint for your book Post links to content created by others TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO45

46 Posting Files It does not matter which type of file you post – When the file is clicked, the application on the user’s computer is activated by the extension For example, if a user of your web site clicks on a link for a Word document, Word will open when the document is clicked If the user does not have the correct application, the user will get an error message asking what application they want to open the file – Audio and video files should be no problem – almost all computers have applications to read these files TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO46

47 Posting Files The first step is to copy the file you want to post and paste it into the homepage folder – Remember to use short file names with no spaces Then add a hyperlink to the file from the page where you want the link to display – I will add a link to an Excel file from my index page TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO47

48 Posting Files Put your cursor in the position where you want the link to appear – Click the Insert tab, then click the hyperlink icon in the Links group – In the text to display box, type Excel template – Make sure current folder is selected on the left, click on the file car_payment and click OK. 49 Posting Files Your page should now look similar to this – You can use the same procedure to post any type of file, such as audio, video, PowerPoint, pdf, pictures, or Office templates TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO49

50 Test Your Website If you double click the index page or any other web page you created, it will open with Internet Explorer (or your default browser) – If you want to edit the page, you need to open Word, click File, then Open, and change the file type to All Web Pages TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO50

51 Testing Your Website When you have your web page open in a browser, click the links to make sure they work – You do not want any broken links – if they don’t work offline they will not work online – This will help you decide if you need to add navigation For example, you should add a link for the main page for any other page you create for your website TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO51

52 Get a Domain and a Host The next step is to get a domain name and a host for your website – You can do both separately, but most hosting services offer both – If you are creating your own content, hosting should cost just a few dollars a month – I use GoDaddy for $2.99 per month and it could be less if I paid by the year TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO52

54 FTP to Your Host FTP sounds a lot more complicated than it is – It stands for File Transfer Protocol, which means you can send a file over the internet without knowing whether it is a video, word file, executable application, etc. A host is just a computer that is always on that is connected to a network – It is associated with your web page, so when someone types in the address, it goes to your page TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO54

55 FTP to Your Host The most important thing is to make sure that you FTP the same folder structure to your host that you used to set up the links – For example, if your picture is in a folder called Pictures, you must upload the folder Pictures with your picture inside – Easiest thing is to open your homepage folder, select all, and upload all at once to your host TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO55

56 Editing Your Site If you want to add or delete a page, you must also update your index page – If you upload a page without a link to that page, no one will be able to find it – If you delete a page or a resource without deleting the link, your users will get an error message When you upload the index page, the software should ask if you want to replace the file You would click OK to replace the index file TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO56

59 YouTube Channel A YouTube channel is easier to set up and maintain than a web site – A YouTube channel is free, and it is possible to make some money from it This is called monetizing your videos You cannot use copyrighted material, such as screenshots or problems from your book – A YouTube channel can also be used if you cannot post non-compliant materials to your learning management system (LMS) TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO59

60 Create a YouTube Channel Go to www.youtube.com www.youtube.com – Click Sign in (even if you do not have an account) – If you do not have a Google+ account, you will see a button that reads Create Account – Otherwise, you can sign in with one of your Google+ accounts or add a new YouTube account TACTYC Annual Meeting 2016 - Denver, CO60
