Continuing professional development to staff Tip: watch this in slide show mode to use the links.

Summary of Content  This example shows the importance of continuing professional development in Science for all staff and it drives T & L in the subject.  It illustrates how informed joint development of Science gives staff ownership and inspires them to improve science provision.  Reflection on impact is embedded and greatly enhances those improvements.

What the school says Our school uses a cost effective approach to CPD as we use an In- House approach, enabling us to ensure all staff access quality CPD for a minimal cost. All staff were involved in CPD including support staff and trainees. Governors would sometimes attend out of interest. Other schools may want to adopt our approach as a way of ensuring that all staff can have access to relevant, tailor made CPD within the constraints of a limited time frame and budget.

How we did it CPD was developed using the In-House Approach that reflected the needs of our ever changing school. These needs were reflected in our School Development Plan and our SEF and helped to shape the type of CPD on offer. An essential element of our CPD was the reflective evaluations that took place afterwards. reflective evaluations

Reflective evaluation of CPD for AFL refresher and APP update Summary Most useful/enjoyable/inspirational parts of the training Very practical, loads of ideas to take away to use in my classroom. Excellent knowledge and delivery from Kate. I really enjoyed today ‐ thank you. Ideas for practical lessons giving opportunities for assessing Afs. Web links sharing ideas with other teachers. Getting lots of ideas for exciting links and ways to approach topics. Resources/websites Fun activities Practical activities and Websites There were a lot of fun activities Good advice about resources. An enjoyable day, have lots to think about. Further comments Use whatever influence you can bring to bear to improve the standards site. It is horrible to navigate, often won’t work with slightly different versions of videos and is a fine example of user‐unfriendliness. (Everyone knows I hate it!) Concerns No concerns recorded It is important for the SL and other staff to reflect on CPD, as it informs future training as well as Science development in the School

The impact for our school was..... Staff felt that they had a greater ownership of the particular areas we had covered. They tried out new things and incorporated these in the way they planned, delivered, assessed and communicated in science. Book and planning monitoring along with observations and discussions with children enabled us to see the impact of any CPD in practice.

In-House CPD for Science Cullercoats Primary School Led by Kate Ardron 2008-2009 Developing thinking skills in science AFL: Opportunities for quality Assessment Asking the right questions in science A crash course to APP Developing APP in the classroom

In-House CPD for Science Cullercoats Primary School Led by Kate Ardron 2009- 2010 Igniting the Creative Spark in science Doing Science Differently - ideas using technology ideas using technology APP: Making Assessment real APP moderation Developing a cross curricular approach AF attended APP science training

Technology in Science These photographs show the use of technology in science. The ones above show Year 1 and 2 children using Fizz Books for researching, recording, graphing, and making bar and pictograms. The photos below show KS2 children using Flip Cams to record an investigation. These movies are being used as evidence in a science fair in New York.

In-House CPD for Science Cullercoats Primary School Led by Kate Ardron 2010- 2011 Hands-on Science - ideaidea Using Stories as a stimulus for cross curricular science - evaluationevaluation Increasing the Pace and Challenge in science Creative Recording – ideaidea An AFL refresher and an APP update JM attended Pace and Challenge Conference for Science

Hands on Science - Evaluating helps us to show impact and make improvements. Kite making – Year 1Year 1 Kite making - Year 5Year 5

CPD Evaluation: Using Stories as a stimulus for cross curricular science Summary Most useful/enjoyable/inspirational parts of the training All of it ‐ lots of practical ideas & hands on experience. Excellent subject knowledge. Great fun! to inspire science. Practical side with application, fun element. Great, lively performance Input from Kate ‐ enjoyed her passion/useful ideas for hands on experience A very focused session ‐ relaxed and appropriate. Stimulating session, a breath of fresh air ‐ knowledgeable & lots of practical ideas. Great session thank you. Practical sessions enjoyable. Full of useful info & lots of ideas, especially for good resources. Practical hands on activities i.e. egg drop V. good subject knowledge and good practice shared re teaching ideas/equipment, sites to visit. Egg drop was very exciting because it was practical, also liked the idea of us deciding how to show what you did. Very informative and entertaining, thank you. The egg drop!!! What a fabulous, fun learning activity to take back for the children to enjoy. The whole session was inspiring and I feel confident in having a go in my own classroom. Further comments None needed

This is an example of a piece of Y5 work. The class were sent a letter and in role as the Doctor, they had to investigate, research and write their findings in the form of a letter. It reflects the CPD and focus on create approaches to recording ion science.

Personal skills audit helped to pinpoint individual staff needs for CPD. Click on the links below to see some examples of the skills audit. Example 1 Example 2

What we will do next Regular discussion with staff opens up new doors and opportunities. Auditing skills and confidence levels amongst staff has helped to clarify particular needs.
