Vectors and Dot Products OBJECTIVES: Find the dot product of two vectors and use the properties of the dot product. Find the angle between two vectors and determine whether two vectors are orthogonal. Write a vector as the sum of two vectors components. Use vectors to find the work done by a force.

 In this section, you will study a third vector operation, the dot product. This operation yields a scalar, rather than a vector.  Definition of the Dot Product  The dot product of is The Dot Product of Two Vectors

 Let be vectors in the plane or in space and let be a scalar.  1.  2.  3.  4.  5. Properties of the Dot Product

 EX 1: Find  A)  B)  C) Finding Dot Products

 EX 2: Let. Use the vectors and the properties of the dot product to find each quantity.  A)  B)  C) Using Properties of Dot Products

 The angle between two nonzero vectors is the angle between their respective standard position vectors. This angle can be found using the dot product.  Angle between Two Vectors  If is the angle between two nonzero vectors, then  The Angle between Two Vectors

 EX 3: Find the angle between Finding the Angle between Two Vectors

 The terms orthogonal and perpendicular mean essentially the same thing – meeting at right angles.  Definition of Orthogonal Vectors  The vectors are orthogonal if and only if  EX 4: Are the vectors orthogonal? Orthogonal Vectors

 You have already seen applications in which two vectors are added to produce a resultant vector. Many applications in physics and engineering pose the reverse problem – decomposing a given vector into the sum of two vector components.  Definition of Vector components: Let be nonzero vectors such that where are orthogonal and is parallel to (or a scalar multiple of). The vectors are called vector components of. The vector is the projection of and is denoted by The vector is given by Finding Vector Components

 EX 5: Find the projection of. Then write as the sum of the two orthogonal vectors, one of which is. Decomposing a Vector into Components

 Definition of Work  The work done by a constant force as its point of application moves along the vector is given by either of the following.  1.  (when the constant force is not directed along the line of motion)  2. (when the constant force is acting along the line of motion) Work

 EX 6: To close a sliding barn door, a person pulls on a rope with a constant force of 50 pounds at a constant angle of. Find the work done in moving the barn door 12 feet to its closed position. Finding Work
