2 Demographics 19% response rate 44%:56% male:female 80% white, 20% Asian Wide range of departments

3 University issues 80% respondents felt that the University supports them in their learning needs? 47% felt that the University has a bullying and harassment issue 69% of staff that had recently been involved in a reorganisation did not think the process had been fair 100% of respondents did not agree with the pay offer 78% did not feel that the recent practice of addressing sickness absence through the Performance Management Policy (rather than the University’s Sickness Absence Policy) is appropriate

7 Equality 62% ticked Promotion & achievement bonus inequalities

8 Union Issues 36% had sought Union advice to resolve issues at work informally or thought about taking out a formal grievance –91% of these felt that it was it easy to access Union help –62.5% had received a satisfactory outcome

9 The majority felt that branch meetings should be held termly (although most options were popular)

11 Union Action Bullying and harassment issues in some depts. Meeting with individual members & where necessary advising taking grievance action Talking to managers to attempt resolution Unfair reorganisation processes Waiting for HR to organise a joint working party Accompanying members involved in re-organisations making sure processes are followed Negotiating on behalf of members who are affected Sickness absence procedures Further discussions at monthly HR/TU meetings

12 Pay Award Organising publicity around the pay dispute Environment – building condition, working area comfort and inefficient resource use Highlighting issues with Safety Services and carrying out our own inspections H&S – stress, bullying & physical env Advising members who have H & S issues Unsatisfactory outcomes to member issues Monthly surgery in union office for members to discuss their issues Advising members, attending meetings with them to talk to managers, talking to managers on their behalf

13 Recent ‘wins’ Bank holiday shifts and payments to Estates craftsmen, Security staff shift system Union/management mediation training Progressing a union learning agreement and staff training facilities Management agreement on Health & safety committees

14 Take Action Dignity & respect at work Comes under the Equality Act 2010 Bullying and Harassment Falls under Health and Safety such that employers have due care for their employees not to bring about stress which leads to mental health problems The HSE gives advice on what to do in these situations

15 What you can do 1.Contact a Unite Union rep. 2.Informal meeting 3.Talk to a Department Equality Officer 4.Counselling or mediation between the two parties 5.Make a diary record and get witness statements 6.Keep copies of relevant emails, meetings, notes and confirm verbal meetings in writing or email 7.Take out a formal grievance Use appeal process if required and take the matter to tribunal if required

16 Get involved Can you spare an hour or so a week? Become a rep Fill other positions on the Branch Exec Committee Can you spare a couple of hours a month? Help with administrative tasks Do you have spare time on occasions? Help with a particular campaign that interests you
