Leadership Styles Autocratic (or authoritarian) Democratic (or participative) Laissez-faire (or delegative or “free reign”) Charismatic Servant

Autocratic Leaders Provide clear expectations for what needs to be done, when it should be done, and how it should be done. Clear divide between the leader and the followers. Make decisions independently. Controlling, bossy, and dictatorial.

Democratic Leaders Generally the most effective leadership style. Encourage input from group members. Retain the final say over the decision-making process. Group members feel engaged.

Laissez-Faire Leaders Offer little or no guidance to employees. Often leave decisions up to employees. Employees are sometimes unable to work independently. Poorly defined roles and a lack of motivation.

Charismatic Charismatic leaders are individuals who are great communicators, they inspire others with their words. People are often very drawn to them and have very emotional connections with these leaders. They are often transformational leaders who can bring change to their organization.

Servant Servant leaders are leaders who inspire others by example. Their goal is to serve the organization and in practice tend to be willing to do anything in their organization—no matter how small the task. Others are drawn to them because they are very “human”, real, and accessible.

Further Exploration There times when each style is appropriate. Styles are situation-dependent. You may transition from one style to another as various situations develop.
