Team Teaching Section 8: Conclusion to Models of Team Teaching

Using the Six Models of Team Teaching The greatest successes occur when instructors intentionally incorporate a combination of models into their lessons. A successful team uses a combination of the models, based on: personalities, philosophies, or strengths of the team teachers the personalities and strengths of the learners the subject being taught Teams should periodically refer back to the six models to ensure that all models are being considered in planning. Section 8: Conclusion

What research says about successful Team Teaching Never take anything for granted; explicitly discuss everything! Communicate clearly with your partner teacher. Effective listening and participation on the part of both members of the team is essential. Establish a procedure for discussing conflicts and differences. Talk through each step of the lesson. Define individual roles. Section 8: Conclusion

Plan for Team Teaching Identify for yourself and each other your individual strengths and abilities and determine how these can be used within the team context. Take an active role together in every stage of the lesson. Set goals/learning outcomes for each lesson and course. Plan lessons according to an agreed-upon timetable. Section 8: Conclusion

Managing the Team-Teaching Classroom Plan and practice transitions, timing, and pacing for lessons. Establish eye contact with each other to signal transitions to new activities and modifications. Circulate throughout the classroom or lab to increase proximity to all students. Partner teachers should circulate at a 180-degree angle to one another to increase student involvement. Share responsibility for giving directions, moving to the next activity, and adapting activities. Develop a mutually agreed upon back-up plan. Section 8: Conclusion

Activity – Review and Reflect: As a team, discuss: –When and why would you use each model of team teaching? Explain your criteria for choosing one model over another. –Reflecting on your integrated outcomes and subject, when would one model be most useful, helpful, productive, than another model? –How would you assess the impact of one model as compared to another model on student learning and engagement?
