2 Unit 4 – Learning Outcomes By the end of this unit you will be able to Use an automated library management system proficiently Use and evaluate online selection tools Use ICT in continuing professional library practice and professional development, to join in professional discussions and to improve your own professional practice

3 Outcome 1 Use an automated library management system proficiently Covers the following knowledge and/or skills - Circulation - Acquisition process - Cataloguing and stock management - Inter-library loans processes

4 Practical exercise - using Library Management System (LMS) Do you carry out routine circulation tasks e.g. registering borrowers, issues/returns etc Do you know the budgetary, ordering and receipting procedures? Are you familiar with your library OPAC? Are you familiar with Inter-library loan (ILL) procedures? If not you will need to organise with your mentor relevant training within your organisation

5 Outcome 2 - Use and evaluate online selection tools Covers the following knowledge and/or skills - Criteria for stock selection - Online library catalogues - Publishers’ and booksellers websites - Online reviews and personal evaluations

6 Criteria for stock selection Consider the following: Customer Demand Stock gaps Stock levels Diversity e.g. of formats Replacement material Stock development plans

7 Activity 1 – Using your knowledge of the library you work in, identify a type of stock that it would be desirable to obtain Using section one of the unit 4 logbook complete tasks 1.1 to 1.3 If this is a ‘real’ stock need (that can be evidenced) then you can submit the results of this activity as part of your logbook assignment

8 Online Resources - Online library catalogues - Publishers’ and booksellers websites -Online reviews and personal evaluations See the Unit 4 ‘Stock selection websites’ document on Moodle for examples of each type of online resource

9 Evaluating Online Resources User friendliness – how easy is the resource to use/navigate Functionality – does it give the information required, are there a variety of search options Reliability – can you trust the information, will the information still be there in the future Accuracy – is the information correct

10 Evaluating Online Resources Currency – how up to date is the information Sufficiency – is there enough or too much information Format – can the information be saved, printed etc Language – what is the readership level, is it bilingual Authority – who provides the information

11 Activity 2 – Use and evaluate online stock selection resources Based on the stock need identified in activity 1 select appropriate online resource to use and evaluate (see sections two and three of the logbook) If this is a ‘real’ stock need then you can submit the results of this activity as part of your logbook assignment

12 Outcome 3 - Use ICT in continuing professional library practice and professional development, to join in professional discussions and to improve your own professional practice Covers the following knowledge and/or skills - Discussion lists - Professional websites - Online professional journals

13 Activity 3 – Using the Professional Development websites document on Moodle, look at a range of relevant websites/discussion lists

14 Assignments for Unit 4 One practical exercise on using a LMS One log book on evaluating online selection tools One report (500-750 words) on using ICT in continuing library practice and professional development, to join in professional discussions and to improve your own professional practice

15 Report Title to be agreed in advance Must not exceed word limit Must cover 2 of the 3 knowledge/skills for outcome 3:  Discussion lists or social media  Professional websites  Online professional journals
