Understanding of Globalization

Perspectives on Globalization Globalization is a controversial topic. To what extent should we embrace globalization? There are several different points of view. They will tell you about how they see the issue and will be based on their individual histories

Their perspectives are based on their own history. Why is it important to learn about others points of view. Canada is a pluralistic society! Example: religion in schools Multiculturalism

Learning about other points of view will allow us to understand each other better. Globalization is the process of becoming interconnected – the building of ties within and among the peoples of the world. This process also involves the idea that we will become more interdependent.

It is so hard to change. It must happen, but why is it happening? Look at the two photographs on page 5. What is going on in them? How has western culture changes the Inuit according to these photos?

What We Need to know! To what extent does globalization influence my life? How does globalization affect economic aspects of people’s lives? Read page 9 Now think of many of the international companies that you deal with daily.

Economic Globalization Over time more and more international companies have invested in Canadian resource development. Have Canadian companies invested in the overseas? Long distance trade has occurred for thousands of years

Nations will trade for what they need and give what they have lots of. Why does Canada not make a lot of clothes? What is Canada good at making? What types of things do we import?

Transnational Companies These are companies that work out of at least 2 countries. What are some examples? Globalization has helped the expansion of foreign companies into other countries.

The desire for profit has driven many companies like Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Burger King to expand into new markets. Opening into a country as large as China would be very profitable. In order to move into new markets the company must understand the regulations within the new market. International regulations need to be adhered to and or changed to facilitate this. Read page 10 to 13 on Walmart

How has free trade added to globalization? What is free trade? Taxes and duties. How does globalization affect a society? A society is a group of people who form a ordered community centered on kinship, an ideology, a religion, a language, or a particular world view

Do all societies have the same views? Ethnocentrism Where you live in Canada will greatly affect how you see the world. Ontario versus Alberta 1980s world price of oil, Lougheed vs. Trudeau.

Globalization Affects Social Aspects of Society Some events change people forever. Losing someone personally Winning the lottery Some forces are harder to see Globalization is one of these forces. Some strong forces that affect us are television, music and movies. Culture transfers form country to country due to these forces.

Where does style come from? People will use similar styles in Edmonton, Calgary as well as Moscow and London. We often imitate the styles we see and some of these influences come from other countries.

In the 1960s and the Beatles: Heavy influence on younger people of the time in style of clothes and how people thought. “We are more popular than Jesus” John Lennon

Many see things like videos and see what the stars are wearing. People see stars with perfect bodies and begin to build sculpted Pecs. Others wear baggy pants, spike their hair and even color their hair certain colors

Ideas on sexuality can be influenced by what we see and hear. People have become more accepting of many things that in the past people were against.

There are many things that have come from other countries that are popular in Canada today. Examples are Japanese anime, musical groups like Green day from the US. Movies today can be made anywhere and actors will come from all over the world.

International Television Television in the past has primarily come from the US. Over the past 10 years more and more shows are coming from other countries. In these shows they will often share their own cultures to an international audience.

According to Daniel Yergin, more and more access to television has created a “woven world”. What do you think this means. The world comes into more houses than ever before. Many people can be influenced by the Television.

What do you think happened to Canadian culture over the last 40 years because of American television? Anthropologists point out that when people watch television they fail to participate in the culture around them.

Televisions influence comes from speed and sensation. Traditional ways of communicating can be considered dull in comparison. In pre-television societies communication is slower and deeper. How many of you sit with your family every night for supper?

Globalization via Television Television can work against traditional cultures. There has been an argument about the positive and negative affects of television. What do you think? In 1964 Marshal McLuhan foresaw that television would cause everyone to be connected into what he called a “global village”

McLuhan understood how technology could change us. There are approximately 1 billion television sets in the world. Access has increased the most in Asian and Arabic worlds.

Who Has Control of the Airwaves? Increased communication is not a bad thing. The problem is who is in charge of what is being shown. How much control should there be? Should American multinational companies be in control of what is on T.V.?

Do you think we should share the same values as the Americans? American values do not always adhere to everyone else’s values. People may end up valuing the American culture more than their own.

This has led to friction and conflict. Many nations will screen what is put in movie theatres and TV. See the bottom of page 18.

Read page 19

Affecting Political Aspects of Society Globalization can affect the political dimensions of your life. East Timor Read page 22-23
