4 Aims, Objectives, & Rationales Personal level: – Expand knowledge in the field of community health nursing – Gain knowledge on translation resources – Increase knowledge about nutrition – Continue utilizing nursing phases – Improve skills in communication and working with a community Community level: – Assess the families nutritional needs – Assess what they are able to utilize with their resources – Giving back to a community in need Rationale: – Gain information on skills & resources to help better educate and communicate with future patients – Original idea to educate both a community and myself

5 Progress Prior to Project Base of knowledge from community health lecture & clinical Two assignments to better understand Head Start community Collected 15-20 recipes during the fall semester

6 Research Grant Applied for a research grant through the Undergraduate and Graduate Research Grant Committee Proposal was selected Received full funding to support expenses of the project

7 Procedure Collection: – Worked with project mentor, Meredith Artigas, Head Start’s registered dietitian – Sent letter to family, friends, & the staff and families of Head Start for recipe ideas – Searched internet – Compiled a total of about 80 recipes – Completed between February 1 st and March 14 th

8 Procedure continued… Analysis: – Worked with Meredith to assess nutritional value of each recipe – Went to Cranston’s local Stop & Shop to compare ingredient prices – Created price list of ingredients – Completed between March 15 th and April 3 rd

9 Procedure continued… Design, Translation, & Presentation: – Designed recipe book – Utilized translation resource on Microsoft Word – Design and translation completed between April 4 th and April 17 th – Books were printed & bound the week of April 18 th – Books will be presented at a Head Start health fair at the beginning of the next school year

10 Value of the Project Further explored field of community health Gained knowledge on resources to better educate and communicate with future patients Increased knowledge on nutrition to better educate labor & delivery patients Learned about translation resources Ultimate goal to provide the best care towards a very diverse patient population
