How to Access Data from the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) at the Global Data Assembly Center (GDAC) and the Long Term Stewardship and Reanalysis Facility (LTSRF) The PRESENT and a look towards the FUTURE Jorge Vazquez, JPL/Caltech, Edward Armstrong, JPL/Caltech, Kenneth Casey NOAA/NODC and Tess Brandon NOAA/NODC

Regional/Global Task Sharing

Current Status Currently GHRSST provides integrated Level 2 Preprocessed (L2P) SST observations from the following sensors: NOAA’s polar orbiting Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) European Space Agency’s (ESA) Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Aqua and Terra spacecrafts NASA’s Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer –Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) on board the Aqua spacecraft NASA’s Tropical Microwave Imager (TMI) on board the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Imager The European Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on board the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) Satellites AVHRR on ESA’s METOPS satellite

In addition, gap-free Level 4 (L4) SST products are available from the following analysis systems: UK Met Office’s OSTIA European RDAC’s ODYSSEA Remote Sensing System (REMSS) MW + IR OI National Climate Data Center (NCDC) Daily OI Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) K10 Analysis Australian Bureau of Meteorology (ABOM’s_ GAMSSA A complete list of all products may be found: http://ghrsst.jpl.nasa.gov/GHRSST_product_table.htmlhttp://ghrsst.jpl.nasa.gov/GHRSST_product_table.html. http://ghrsst.jpl.nasa.gov/GHRSST_product_table.html

Current Status All data files are in netCDF3 file format All data files contain COARDS/CF compliant file level metadata All data files have a corresponding DIF metadata record, and once in the Long Term Stewardship and Reanalysis Facility (LTSRF), FGDC metadata as well

Summary of Data Access Points for GHRSST Data Data greater than 30 days old may be accessed at the Long Term Stewardship and Reanalysis Facility (LTSRF) –http://ghrsst.nodc.noaa.gov Data less than 30 days old may be accessed at the Global Data Assembly Center (GDAC) –http://ghrsst.jpl.nasa.gov or http://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov http://ghrsst.jpl.nasa.govhttp://podaac.jpl.nasa.govhttp://ghrsst.jpl.nasa.govhttp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov OPENDAP access at –http://dods.jpl.nasa.gov http://dods.jpl.nasa.gov –http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/nph-dods/ghrsst http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/nph-dods/ghrsst Level 4 products are accessible through POET interface at: –http://poet.jpl.nasa.gov

GDAC Access: Data Search Here on the GDAC Data Search Page, you can look for GHRSST data by geographic region, time, by Sensor/Product Level, and by RDAC As an example, select 2007- Jan-13 as both start and stop dates, select AMSR-E as the Sensor, and select “Detailed” as the search results format to find all AMSR-E data from that date. Then click on “Submit”

DATA STATS GHRSST Data Stats from 2006 to the present. Data Users Data Volume Data Files

Data Users (GDAC+LSTRF)

FUTURE Projects and Improvements to Data Access New PO.DAAC Data Management and Archive System (DMAS) including Oracle Database for search and discovery Data Aggregation Level 2 subsetting Virtual Ocean Data Center (VODC) –Robert Raskin (PI), Chris A. Mattmann (CO-I, Architecture/Implementation Lead), Sean McCleese (Developer), Jorge Vazquez (PO.DAAC Scientist, Ocean Data Expert), Ed Armstrong (Ocean Data Expert), Sean Hardman (PO.DAAC Development Mgr.) 14-Jun-16VODCCAM-12

PO.DAAC Architecture Supporting GHRSST - 2009 PO.DAAC is undergoing an extensive redesign in data management to promote more automation, technology enhancements and interoperability. GHRSST products and GDAC systems will “grandfathered” into this new infrastructure.

What is VODC? A ROSES 2007 funded proposal to allow for access to large amounts of data regardless of physical location. Example user doesn’t need to know whether GHRSST data at LTSRF or GDAC. –In the making since 2005 –Targeted at NOAA, and NASA data 14-Jun-16VODCCAM-14

Challenges for the Future How do we access large amounts of data so users can get time series of data in small areas? –Data Aggregation
