2 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean EUMEDCONNECT3 Contract DANTE/EC contract started 1 Sept 2011 42 month term (to March 2015 ) Up to 3.29M Euro EC funding, up to 36.19% EC funding contribution Co-ordinating Partner: DANTE Contract partners: ASREN, CYNET, GARR, GRNET, RENATER, Red.ES Eligible: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia Other countries welcome to join at own cost www.eumedconnect3.net/

3 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean EC Aims for EUMEDCONNECT3 Overall Objective “ensure long-term sustainability of the research networking e-infrastructure between the EU and ENPI South countries in order to maximise the synergies of bilateral and regional research and education projects.” Results required Network costs and performance maintained/improved Documented usage, research impacts and benefits enable countries to lobby for funding ASREN’s capacity enhanced Network transition to ASREN Positive ROM (Results Oriented Monitoring) June 2013

4 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean Connectivity Status I Algeria - 155 Mbps link upgraded to 622Mbps since September 2012. Further upgrade to 2.5 Gbps under discussion. Egypt – ENSTINET connected to GEANT at 622 Mbps since February 2013, connects EUN as well. EUN interested in own connection Jordan – ASREN contracting 155Mbps link to London PoP Lebanon – LNRN interested in connection once national network is established

5 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean Connectivity status II Libya – early interest from MOHE Morocco – planning to tender for own EUMEDCONNECT connection. DANTE discussing modality for providing EC funding support. Palestine - 45 Mbps since May 2012, disconnected July 2013 for budget reasons Syria – currently no prospect of re-connection Tunisia – no recent updates

6 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean EUMEDCONNECT3 Budget Scheduled to run to March 2015 Currently spending is well below projected due to connection status Processing of 2013 EC payment request was delayed, but now appears to be resolved

7 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean DANTE Priorities for next 6 months 1.Increasing regional connectivity EUMEDCONNECT connections provided by DANTE or Partners Gulf connectivity 2. Concrete actions to continue to support ASREN’s development Infrastructure Service development Capacity building Financial support and sustainability 3. EUMEDCONNECT support: Review future plans with the EC Disseminating R&E infrastructure benefits to regional stakeholders

8 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean EUMEDCONNECT3 Benefits EC co-funding for beneficiary countries Dedicated EUMEDCONNECT3 connectivity at best rates: – Direct access to all European research and education communities via GEANT at no cost to users – Access to research and education communities in North America, Asia and all other world regions via GEANT at no cost to users – Ability to access DANTE Global IP transit service at special rates – Managed and operated by DANTE Human capacity building (especially technical training) Travel support to project meetings and training activities Marketing support Expertise and help of DANTE, ASREN and EU NREN partners

9 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean Sub-Saharan Africa:AfricaConnect 4-year project divided in Planning/Procurement Phase and Operational Phase, started May 2011 Total Budget of 15 M Euro (divided in 80:20) for AfricaConnect Partners: UbuntuNet Alliance 14 UbuntuNet Alliance member NRENs WACREN and Association of African Universities DFN, GARR, FCCN, HEANET, JANET, SURFnet DANTE as the Coordinating Partner PoPs in London, Amsterdam and Mtunzini Contract awarded for connecting Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, UA PoP in Amsterdam. 15 year term Tender underway for DRC, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi

10 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean Central Asia: CAREN First phase 2009 – 2013 €6.25m 80% EC, 20% from beneficiaries Connecting Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan; Uzbekistan eligible PoPs in Frankfurt (DFN supported) and Hong Kong (TEIN supported) Second phase started in October 2013 with EC initially providing €2.8m at 90% co-funding for 12 months Main focus in next 12 months First CAREN Regional Conference Planning 3-4 year extension of CAREN2

11 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean 11 Asia-Pacific: TEIN Operational since 2006 16 Asia-Pacific countries connected; +50 m users Managed by DANTE until 2012 when handed over to TEIN* Cooperation Center (TEIN*CC) New phase (TEIN4): 2012-2016 €8m (50%) EC funding support for beneficiary countries TEIN*CC supported by DANTE (consultancy agreement) Main focus in next 12 months Advising TEIN*CC on TEIN4 procurement and financial planning Providing promotional support and advice Early TEIN5 planning

12 The Research and Education Network for the Mediterranean 12 Latin America: RedCLARA Since 2004 13 Latin American NRENs, US and Europe connected Through EC-funded ALICE and ALICE2 projects and additional regional funds First regional project where network management was handed over to regional partner organisation: (Red)CLARA ALICE2 terminated in January 2013; 2.5 GB transatlantic link cost-shared between GEANT and LA partners Main focus in next 12 months Closing procurement to replace current link: aim for 5Gbps by Feb/March 2014. Successful completion of ELCIRA; looking to ELCIRA2 with LA and potentially other world regions
