NERC Innovation Oil & Gas Challenging Environments Workshop 17 th October 2014

rugh@nerc.ac.uk Prof. David Tappin NERC Innovation Team Sept 2012

Resumé Brief Introduction to NERC. NERC Strategy. Business plan. Interaction between NERC science and capability with industry. Innovation – translation of NERC science and capability. NERC Oil and Gas Innovation projects. NERC Oil and Gas Innovation Themes. NERC working with business. Partnerships

Research Councils UK

What is NERC? Of all the Research Councils – NERC is primarily responsible for the environment It has a number of funding streams HEIs – pure science Research establishments – more applied NERC Innovation calls – ‘science to industry’

NERC science budget * National Capability 39 % Knowledge Exchange 6 % Research Programmes 22 % Responsive Mode 33 % *£350M annual budget

NERC Centres – National Capability

NERC Strategy Meeting society’s needs in: Benefiting from natural resources Resilience to environmental hazards Managing environmental change Discovery science Vision: To place environmental science at the heart of responsible management of our planet

Natural Resources - The Issue “Looking across the sectors that provide growth in the UK's economy, and where a strong understanding of the environment is absolutely essential, it is hard to think of one where the need is higher than in oil and gas. It's vital that NERC contributes to ensuring growth with responsible environmental management for the industry.” (Professor Duncan Wingham, CEO NERC)

NERC Strategy Making it happen by: Investing in innovation and impact Investing in world-class research and skills International partnerships Listening to our partners Managing our assets and administration Recognising our success Vision: To place environmental science at the heart of responsible management of our planet

External-facing team Understand business and policy challenges & knowledge needs Identify where research can help Design mechanisms to enable business & policy-makers to access research Broker connections Uptake of science Innovation

Working with business Funds research, knowledge exchange & innovation in UK research organisations Brokers relationships (users with scientists) Knowledge exchange Translation Co-design Co-delivery

Working with business NERC works in partnership with business to place environmental science at the heart of responsible management of the planet Understand your needs : How can science help your organisation? Broker access to scientists, data, facilities and skills Co-design research, where new knowledge is needed Translate existing research : Provide the knowledge & solutions you need http://www.nerc.ac.uk/business /

New mechanisms New strategic activities with business & policy – Strategic partnerships – Innovation programmes, e.g. Business clubs Focus areas : – Data – Risk management – Natural Resources – Infrastructure – Sustainable agriculture

NERC Innovation Oil and Gas Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) KE Fellowships Oil and Gas Pump-priming funding Oil and Gas Innovation Programme £2.8m investment Focused on creating highly skilled workforce for O&G, energy and wider environment sectors Led by Heriot-Watt University Including 7 HEI partners First intake October 2014 £600k investment Focused on developing industry links with O&G sector Kate Gormley – Heriot-Watt University Bob Holdsworth – Durham University Bill McCaffrey – University of Leeds £800k investment (1 st call, 2013 – 15 projects) Up to £1m further investment (2 nd call, 2014) Focused on developing collaborative innovation projects between industry and academic partners £5m investment, 5 years Industry - focused Translation driven Four themes: Unconventional hydrocarbons Challenging Environments Mature Basins Environmental Management Launch early 2015 NERC Innovation

NERC Oil and Gas Innovation NERC is currently developing an Oil and Gas Innovation Programme. The purpose of the oil and gas innovation funding call is to develop new partnerships and collaborations between researchers and the oil and gas industry and to build on existing partnerships and collaborations. The outputs of the oil and gas innovation projects call will help us explore four major themes through workshops and additional opportunities for the innovation programme.oil and gas innovation funding call

Mapping NERC expertise potential collaborations Reports on NERC centres and HEIs Mapping NERC Centres relevant to the Oil and Gas Industry Mapping industries knowledge of NERC, it’s scientific expertise and relevance

Four Workshops The programme will be informed by a set of workshops on the following themes: –Unconventional hydrocarbons (24 th Sept 2104) –Exploitation in challenging environments (17 th Oct 2014) –Environmental impact and management (3 rd Dec 2014) –Extending the life of mature basins (Early 2015 – coordinate with 21 st Century Roadmap)

Strategy From the workshops - determine synergies and potential partnerships, The focus is on ‘Innovation’ – translation and co-ordination of existing NERC research and capability, Determine priorities, Decide on funding calls Focus is on environmental impacts £5 million available for a 3-5 year programme

Partnerships Industry-challenge focused with industry members actively involved in definition of calls to the academic community around the Programme’s key priority themes; Open calls to the academic community for collaborative projects that will translate the outcomes of research (data, knowledge, expertise or capacity) into industry relevant outputs and deliverables; Intellectual property will be dealt with at a project level and between grant holders and the industry member; Regular dissemination events will be organised at which researchers report their latest findings to members of the Innovation Programme. The first call to be made following the Programme’s launch in early 2015 Is early 2015 more realistic

Challenging Environments - Themes This event will cover; –deep water –arctic regions –sub-salt and sub-basalt imaging –high temperature and pressure reservoirs
