2 The 1990’s William Jefferson Clinton – won the 1992 Election against George HW Bush and H. Ross Perot. – Strengthen the weak economy. – Move people off of welfare – Growth of private business – Wanted to create a “new” and more inclusive Democratic Party

3 The 1990’s Moderate Reform and Economic boom – Health Care - Plan for affordable health care for everyone - appointed wife Hillary Rodham Clinton (Lawyer and child-welfare advocate). Bill created lobbied for 2 years but never voted on. – Balanced Budget and an Economic Boom – for 1 st time in 30 years federal budget had a surplus, which was used to pay down the $5.5. trillion national debt. – Reform Welfare – limits placed on how long people could receive benefits. Ended a 61 year federal guarantee of welfare and gave states “block grants” – set amounts of Fed. $ to spend on welfare or other social concerns

7 The 1990’s New Foreign Policy Challenges – Clinton keeps up relations with Russian and China. – Clinton sent troops to Haiti in 1991 to force military leaders to step down reinstating elected president of Haiti. – North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Mexico enters free trade with U.S. and Canada. Partisan Politics and Impeachment – Republicans take control of Congress Newt Gingrich – Contract with America – 10 items Republicans promise to enact if they win control of Congress. – 1996 Election Clinton wins w/ 49% of popular vote – Clinton Impeached – improper use of $ for 1984 reelection campaign with Whitewater Development Company & improper relations with young White House intern. 2 nd president in 130 yrs to face a trial in Senate, which fell short of the 67 votes (2/3 majority) needed.

GW Bush Administration – Following 9/11 signed antiterrorism bill, created department of Homeland Security, Patriot Act, 2002 War in Afghanistan al-Quaeda Osama bin Laden, 2003 War in Iraq – Saddam Hussein refused to cooperate with UN arms inspectors, Domestic Agenda = No Child Left Behind

9 The New Global Economy The Shifting Economy – Millions of new jobs 1993-1999, unemployment rate lowest since 1970. – More Service, Less Security – 80% of workers were in the service industry – Farms and Factories – shift to service jobs declined #’s of workers in Farming and Factories. – High-Tech Industries – Bill Gates – Microsoft assets estimated at $60 Billion. NASDAQ National Association of Securities dealers Automated Quotation System) high-tech businesses (dotcoms) grew.

10 The New Global Economy Change and the Global Economy – International Trade – General agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) – treaty lowered trade barriers, tariffs, and established World Trade Organization (WTO). – International competition – companies move to other countries.

11 Technology and Modern Life Communications Revolution – Information superhighway – communication devices linking people and institutions across the nation and the world. Internet allowing instant transmittal of text, image, & sound. – New Tools, New Media – Electronic connections TV, cable, phone = video streaming, research, on-line shopping, etc. People can telecommute, work out of their homes. – Legislating Technology – Telecommunication Act of 1996 – removed barriers of one type of company from starting up or buying another.

12 Technology and Modern Life Scientific Advances Enrich Lives – Simulation, Robotics, and Machine Intelligence. “Virtual Landscape” - doctors – Space Exploration – Live pictures of Mars – Biotechnology – Cloning “Dolly” – Genetic engineering artificial changing of the molecular biology of organisms’ cells. Crops resistant to pests. – Medical Progress – MRI, AIDS therapies, – Environmental Measures - Recycling

13 The Changing Face of America Urban Flight – people leave the cities and move to the suburbs – Causes – job seeking, overcrowding, increased crime rates, housing decay. – Suburban living – Telecommute, lower taxes, tax incentives for businesses to move to suburbs.

14 Other’s you should know. Barack H. Obama Nelson Mandella – Anti apartheid Activist served 27 years in jail. First president of Africa in a full Democratic election. Has received over 250 awards over 4 decades. Kim Jong-il – supreme leader of North Korea Kim Jong-un – Current supreme leader of North Korea (3 rd son of Kim Jong-il)
