Year 2 SATs May 2016

What will the children be doing! ◎ Spelling paper ◎ Grammar and punctuation paper ◎ Reading paper 1 ◎ Reading paper 2 ◎ Maths - Arithmetic paper ◎ Maths - Reasoning paper

What are the changes? The Government wanted to raise the bar and place higher expectations on all children no matter what their needs or abilities are!

So how does this manifest itself? Children are no-longer assessed using levels but will be judged to be either:- ◎ Emerging ◎ Expected or ◎ Exceeding The old level 3 is now the expected level on the new assessments and the emerging level is anything below level 2a – 3.

Grammar, punctuation and spelling! This is new to KS1, but the children have been learning this since they started in Year 1. Some of the things that the children need to identify are:- ◎ Nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs ◎ Suffixes and compound words ◎ Past and present tenses ◎ When an apostrophe is used!

Reading Test The children will sit 2 papers, which will have lower and higher levelled questions on them. The text will be given followed by the questions, so the children have to be able to look back to find their answers.

Maths Test There are 2 papers: an arithmetic paper and a reasoning paper. The questions can be read to the children, but they must answer the questions without any aids, such as, 100 squares, cubes, etc. The children are expected to rely upon methods, such as using a blank number line or drawing cubes, etc. to help themselves – thus applying what they have been taught independently and accurately. Also note that the children are also expected to know their 3 times tables!

English Test There is no longer a writing assessment, but the children will be allocated a teacher assessment mark. Writing has changed dramatically! The children have to meet all the criteria of a given level to achieve that level. There is a much greater emphasis on handwriting and if children are not forming all of their letters correctly then they cannot be higher than expected level, even if they have all of the other criteria.

What should you do? ◎ Make sure your child gets to bed early during the SATs weeks. ◎ Encourage them to adopt a ‘give it a go’ approach and re-read their work to look for any errors. ◎ Encourage to use My Maths at least a couple of times per week. ◎ Support them when completing their homework, as this is all based for Y2 children!

Any questions?

Thank you for coming and for your continual support! ◎ We will continue to work together to achieve the best possible result for your child!
