Forest Management Week of Feb 29
2
Bellringer: Feb 29 th & March 1 st Name one consequence of deforestation
3
Forest Resources Forests cover 30% of Earth’s land Most of the world is either boreal or tropical 1/3 of the forests are used for timber Roles: Maintain soil Maintain air Maintain water quality Biogeochemical cycles Medicine Food Biodiversity Pg 105 - INB
4
Harvesting Most commercial harvesting takes place in Canada, Russia and Brazil In the US, most takes place in coniferous forests of the west or south
5
Methods Clear Cutting: 50’s – 70’s approach All of the trees from an area are cut at once Most cost efficient but the greatest negative impact on ecosystems Destroys entire ecosystem, causes soil erosion, increase sunlight on ground level This change in light, precip, wind and temp leads to new microclimate, changing the original ecosystem
6
Seed Tree Small numbers of mature and healthy seed producing trees are left standing so that they can re-seed the area Shelter trees are left to to provide shelter to the seedlings as they grow
7
Selection System Only some of the trees are cut down at once Trees spaced widely apart are cut at one time and small random patches of trees are cut Cons: moving trucks disturb the forest, more expensive, and more dangerous
8
Deforestation The clearing of a forest and replacing of it for another use Negative Effects: Loss of biodiversity Loss of soil productivity Adds CO2 to the air, adding to climate change
11
Fire Policies Forest service took Smokey’s message to heart The suppressed all fires, even naturally occurring ones Some plants depend on fire in order to seed This also leads to catastrophic events eventually 2009 California fires
12
Sustainable Forestry Products Wood and paper products made from environmentally sustainable methods Initially, timber companies refused to convert their methods but now 70% of the harvest in British Columbia, Canada is certified sustainable SUPPLY AND DEMAND
13
