1 5th Grade Exhibition  A chance for students to show their skills and reflect on all that they have learned over the years as an IB student  A chance for students to explore multiple perspectives  A chance for students to display and use the IB attitudes and profile that they have adopted  A chance for Charles Hay World School to celebrate the transition of learners from primary to middle school and evaluate how our school is performing within the IB program

2 Sharing the Planet Central Idea: In the struggle to share finite resources with other people and other living things, people have certain rights and responsibilities.

3 Inquiry into: - rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; -communities and the relationships within and between them; -access to equal opportunities; -peace and conflict resolution

4  Students brainstorm ideas/topics /problems that they are interested in studying  Students are placed in small groups based on what they are interested in  Groups meet with a mentor to begin studying their topic Student Grouping/Organization

5 Students Take Action! With their mentor groups, students decide on an action to improve a situation that they have been studying After researching their topic, students show their problem solving skills by taking action

6 Students Share (The Exhibition) Students create a presentation for a community audience Students share their research Students share their actions and results

7 Roles for Everyone in the 5th Grade Exhibition » Students : participate and work cooperatively in groups »Be an active learner »Ask questions and follow up by finding out some answers »Take action »Present your results

8 Timeline »November-Central idea is presented, students begin brainstorming ideas/ problems for study »December- Topics chosen, Mentor/Teacher Meeting, Groups Formed & Mentors Assigned, Mentor/Group Lunch » January-Groups meet and begin in-depth research weekly »February-March-Classroom work increases especially during CSAP; Action piece »April- Weds. 13th--Exhibition Dress Rehearsals, Thursday 14th--Exhibition

9 What Looks Different… *Students are prepared with more research skills and note-taking strategies *More background knowledge of topic BEFORE inquiry takes place: Leads to a deeper, more thorough inquiry, with an authentic interest *Increase of materials, resources, and checkpoints that are pre-planned

10 Role of Parents  Actively brainstorm with your child about possible topics to study  Discuss weekly the progress of your child’s group work  Provide opportunities for research and encourage organization of findings  Let the students do the work (research is the only piece that will be done at home, all other work like writing and the presentation will be done at school)

11 Role of 5th Grade Teachers Help students brainstorm and focus their ideas Organize mentors and groups **Provide mentors with resources Meet with mentors to make sure groups are on track Check student progress regularly Set up and organize the Exhibition

12 Role of Other Teachers Implement the POI and provide experience with the 5 essential elements Provide opportunity for inquiry Consider how your teaching ultimately supports and contributes to the Exhibition Help students construct meaning through problem-based learning Provide any additional resources: Guest speakers, members of the community directly related to research topics, books

13 Role of Principal and IB Coordinator Provide support to all staff and students involved in exhibition Provide opportunities for staff development Promote and attend the Exhibition Allocate sufficient time for teacher planning Allocate sufficient funds to support the exhibition **Nancy’s will be a ‘Mentor Supporter’ and not a mentor herself

14 Role of the Mentor Act as a guide and resource for your group (3-5 students) Use your expertise or help students find experts on their topic of study Meet with your group once a week during the months of January, February, March, and April. Times will be arranged around your schedule Monitor group’s progress and help with student goal setting Assist with student assessment

15 A Call for Mentors! Mentors should be adults interested in working with kids or those that have a passion aligned with what students want to study. Other staff members Retired teachers Community members *Generally not parents or 5th grade teachers
