Golfing Terms – on course: Tee block – the area where you will start any golf hole. Work out which coloured tee blocks you are supposed to hit from then place your ball in between them but behind the markers. Fairway – this is short mowed grass area between the tee block and the putting greens. Putting Green – this is the area where the hole is at the end of a golf hole with the very short grass. Bunker – is a golf course hazard, it’s a hole, or depression, in the ground filled with sand.

Golfing Terms – scoring: Par – the recommended number of shots a player needs to take to complete a hole (or 18 holes). Birdie – a score of one shot under par for the hole. Bogey – a score of one shot over par for the hole, Double Bogey is two shots over par and so on. Eagle – a score of two shots under par for the hole.

Golfing Terms – Other: Gimme – a term for a putt that is close enough to the hole that it will certainly be made. The other player says “it’s a gimme” and the player doesn't have to putt it. Ringer – the score applied to a hole which the golfer has not completed for whatever reason. Haggle – this is a non-official match, in an agreed format played between members of a four. A small wager often accompanies a “haggle”. Honour – the privilege of hitting the first tee shot on the next hole because you scored the best on the previous hole. Fore – the term used to warn other golfers that your ball might be going to land near them – this is a safety call.

Golfing Terms – Gear: Driver – the driver is designed to hit the ball the farthest. It is the club with the largest club head, the longest shaft and the least amount of loft (except for the putter). It is generally used off the tee on the tee block. Wood(s) – have large, rounder heads and are used to hit the ball longer distances. Iron(s) – these clubs numbered from 3 to 9, 3 has the least loft and the ball will go further. 9 gives the most loft and least distance. Wedge(s) – these clubs have letters on them (S = sand, P = pitching). These clubs have the most loft and the ball will go the least distance. Putter – this is the club used on the greens to roll the ball along the surface of the green and into the hole. Trundler – this is the trolley (with wheels) that you put your golf clubs (golf bag) on to carry them around the course.

Lesson #1: Part One – What all the golf Clubs do: Part Two – Putting: #1Set up: How do we stand when we Putt? Firstly put your hands on your knees, bring hands together, then point fingers towards toes, then pull arms up to tummy. #2 Grip: Left hand below the right hand, thumbs on top of the grip with both hands pulled together. A putting stroke is designed to roll the ball along the ground. #3Distance Control: The putting stroke works like a pendulum to try and get the same distance back from the ball after you hit the ball. Part Three – Full Swing: #1Simple set up: tilt, tuck, pop and drop set up. #2Grip: using the reminder grips to demonstrate the correct grip. #3Baseball swing and Tip drill: this is a great drill to help you turn correctly and to understand how your hands and arms work in the swing as well as to feel the balance required at the finish of the swing Part Four – Chipping: #1Set up: Same posture as full swing, width of stance – feet one club head apart, weight 75% on the left leg (right hand golfer). #2Grip: Same as the full swing. #3Swing: Just like an underarm throw. Always swing slightly downwards to lift the ball up into the air.

Lesson #2: Part One – Putting: #1Recap on lesson one #2 Drills: distance drill #3Putt along a line on the green to learn about alignment. Use golf balls with lines on them to work on getting the ball rolling true. Part Two – Chipping: #1Recap on lesson one #2Keep your backswing and forward swing the same length to control the distance. #3Chipping at targets to get the feel for distance control Part Three – Full Swing: #1Drill: how the body works for the golf swing. #2Recap on lesson one #3Drill: two person drill working on set up and alignment of the head and shoulders.

Lesson #3: Part One – Putting: #1Recap on lessons so far #2 Drills: distance drill and lining up drill #3Putting course set up to give you an idea what the greens and holes look like on the golf course. Part Two – Chipping: #1Recap on lessons so far #2Try landing the ball ½ way to the hole to get a feel of flight and roll. #3Work around the green to various locations aiming at different targets to understand how different angles work and differing ball positions. Part Three – Full Swing: #1Recap on lessons so far #2Recap on body working lesson #3Drill: target golf practice.

Lesson #4: On Course: Part One: This is the last lesson of the series. Today you will be out playing some golf. This will give you the opportunity to put the last 3 weeks of lessons into practice. This will also give you an idea of what it is like to play golf. The purpose of this lesson is to show you around the golf course and let you have fun with your new skill set.
