What is a volunteer? Why are they important? Think! Pair! Share!

Volunteer: A person who performs a service willingly and without pay.

Volunteer Organizations in our Community: Red Cross Food Pantry Humane Society Shelter Can you name others?

Where are volunteers needed?

Global Problem: Some families have to travel to other cities and/or countries to receive the best medical care for their child. This impacts families around the world financially. While their child is in the hospital for an extended stay receiving medical treatment the family is in need of a place to stay. While insurance companies help with the medical expenses for the child they do not fully cover the cost and they do not cover any cost for providing families with a place to stay.

Ronald McDonald House This organization found a solution to help those families. They provide a place for these families to stay while their child is in the hospital free of charge or at a discounted rate that they can afford.

Where in the world can you find a Ronald McDonald House? Argentina Australia Austria Belgium Brazil Bulgaria Canada Chile China Columbia Costa Rica Curacao Czech Republic Denmark Ecuador Finland France Germany Guatemala Hong Kong Hungary Indonesia Ireland Italy Japan Korea Latvia Malaysia Mexico Netherlands New Zealand Norway Panama Peru Philippines Poland Portugal Puerto Rico Romania Russia Singapore Slovakia South Africa Spain Sweden Switzerland Taiwan Thailand Turkey United Kingdom United States Uruguay Venezuela Earth

Where in our country can you find a Ronald McDonald House? Alabama Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin USA

Where in our state can you find a Ronald McDonald House? Charlotte Greenville Winston- Salem Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill North Carolina

Where in our community can you find a Ronald McDonald House? Charlotte, NC 1613 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28207

How can you help? Collect pop tabs! The Ronald McDonald House takes the pop tabs and sells the aluminum to recycling centers. They get between $.35 and $.85 a pound. All of the money raised through pop tabs is used to cover the cost for families to stay at the Ronald McDonald House. It costs the organization about $75.00 a night per family.

How Many Tabs? 1 pound ≈ 1,000 tabs 1000 pounds ≈ 1 million tabs 1 ton ≈ 2 million tabs

Let’s solve… If 1,000 tabs equals 1 pound and 1 pound equals $.50. How many pounds do we need to collect to cover the cost of one family for one night at $75.00? How many tabs would that be?

Global Issues & Organizations What are some other Global Issues? Is there a local or global organization that is helping to solve this problem? Where are they located? How do they help? Is there something we can do to help the cause? If there is not an organization, create one with your group. How will your organization help, where will it be located, how will this organization make a local and global impact?

Sharing Global Issues & Organizations
