MATH VOCABULARY By: Sierra Lewis

Legs of a right triangle The sides that make the right angle.

Integer Positive number and negative numbers.

rational number Any number that can be made by dividing one integer by another. The word comes from "ratio".

scientific notation A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. The scientific notation of 10,492, for example, is 1.0492 × 10 4.

perfect square An integer that is the square of an integer.

irrational number Any real number that cannot be expressed as a ratio between two integers.

real numbers A number that is rational or irrational, not imaginary.

Density Property The density property tells us that we can always find another real number that lies between any two real numbers. For example, between 5.61 and 5.62, there is 5.611, 5.612, 5.613 and so forth.

Adjacent angles two angles that have the same vertex and a side in common

Coefficient a numerical or constant factor in an algebraic term

Distance Formula Algebraic expression that gives the distances between pairs of points in terms of their coordinates

Domain All the values that go into a function The output values are called the range.

Hypotenuse The side opposite the right angle in a right- angled triangle.

Range The difference between the lowest and highest values.

Slope How steep a straight line is.

Prism A solid object that has two identical ends and all flat sides.

Scatter plot A graph of plotted points that show the relationship between two sets of data.

Slope intercept form the equation of a straight line in the form y = mx + b where m is the slope of the line and b is its y-intercept

The end ;)
