2 Objectives: 1)To identify and define 5 different types of sleep disorder 2)To describe why REM sleep is important 3)To describe the different types of treatment available in a sleep clinic 4)To diagnose different types of sleep disorder

3 Snoring is a psychological sleep disorder Without REM sleep we will become paranoid, and disorientated Insomnia means we cannot get to sleep, or stay asleep Circadian rhythm disorders means we keep falling asleep Nightmares and night terrors happen during REM sleep Wetting the bed is a type of parasomnia! REM sleep behaviour disorder means the pons is not activated during REM sleep Primary sleep disorders are the start of many other problems Jet lag is a type of secondary sleep disorder Prescription drugs can lead to insomnia Insomnia is a song Insomnia becomes more common as people get older. Psychological and physiological issues are the same thing TRUE or FALSE sleep disorders

5 Treatments at a sleep clinic What are these treatments? What are they used to treat? What will they feel like for the patient?

9 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Changing negative thoughts into positive ones. Hoping to change the behaviour into more positive behaviour

10 Task: As an expert psychologist in the field of sleep disorders you have decided to open up a sleep clinic. You need to advertise your services: You can create a poster, a leaflet or a radio ad. You MUST include a description of the disorders you treat and the methods by which you treat them. You SHOULD include specific examples and a description of what the treatment will be like from the patients perspective You COULD include information about further research that you do, and advice about the possible side effects of treatments.
