3 Cuba “Officially” independent from colonial rule Platt Amendment: –U.S. had the right to intervene in Cuban affairs –U.S. could buy or lease land on Cuba for naval stations Protectorate: country whose affairs are partially controlled by a stronger power

4 Philippines Filipinos upset with U.S. occupation Aguinaldo lead rebels against U.S. U.S. forced people into designated zones with poor sanitation War claimed over 20,000 Filipinos and 4,000 Americans and cost $400 million U.S. set up gov’t with appointed governor Gained independence July 4, 1946

5 China John Hay (Sec. of State) wrote the Open Door Notes –Policy statements asking Imperialist nations to share trading rights in China Boxer Rebellion – Chinese who wanted to rid China of foreign influence U.S. would intervene around the world to keep foreign markets available to them
