Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Today’s Psalm Reading by Eun Ji Kim Psalms 97 1.The LORD reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice. 2.Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 3.Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. 4.His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. 5.The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. 6.The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory. 7.All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols-- worship him, all you gods! 8.Zion hears and rejoices and the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments, O LORD.

Today’s Psalm Reading by Eun Ji Kim Psalms 97 9.For you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. 10.Let those who love the LORD hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. 11.Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. 12.Rejoice in the LORD, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.

This Week’s Verse So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. (Acts 11:26) (Aug. 26)

Next Week’s Verse The disciples, each according to his ability, decided to provide help for the brothers living in Judea. This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. (Acts 11:29,30) (Sep. 2)

Today’s phrase The disciples, each according to his ability, decided to provide help for the brothers living in Judea. ________, each according to his(her) ability, decided to ________. (Aug. 26) It suddenly dawned on Peter that it was not wise for a well-known, easily recognizable escaped prisoner to remain standing there in the street.. It suddenly dawned on ________ that ________. (Sep. 2)

This Week’s Conversation A: The Acts in the Bible really gives me a lot of precious lessons. B: For instance? A: According to the chapter 11 of Acts, Barnabas and Saul taught great numbers of people. B: You mean, teaching God’s Words is significant. A: Yes. Pastor John MacArthur said, “Teaching the Word of God is at the heart of the church’s ministry.” B: I totally agree with him. A: Knowledge of God’s Word is always key to becoming a faithful and spirit-filled believer. B: We have to make a great effort to fill ourselves with God’s Words every day. A: I’m also happy to study the Words in the NIV class. B: You can say that again!

Next Week’s Conversation A: Why don’t you take part in the NIV memorization contest? B: Have you ever attended it? A: Yes, I have. B: How was it? A: You know, it was very unusual and graceful experience to see God’s Words proclaimed by people of all ages. B: Which verse did you memorize? A: My favorite one, Psalm 23, which comforts me whenever I’m in a trouble. B: Memorizing God’s Words is always of great help in the course of life. A: Definitely! Why don’t you take part in the contest? B: Yes, I will participate in it. Thank you for your advice.

Today’s Reading Acts 12:1-19 1.It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2.He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. 3.When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. 4.After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. 5.So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. 6. The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance.

Today’s Reading Acts 12:1-19 7.Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists. 8.Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him. 9.Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10.They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.

Today’s Reading Acts 12:1-19 11.Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating." 12.When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13.Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14.When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!" 15."You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, "It must be his angel." 16. But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.

Today’s Reading Acts 12:1-19 17.Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell James and the brothers about this," he said, and then he left for another place. 18.In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19.After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there a while.

The Folly of Fighting God Part I (Acts 12:1 – 19) History is strewn with the wreckage of the broken lives of those foolish enough to fight God. – J. MacArthur

Throughout the universe, war rages on every front. God, the holy angels, and elect men battle Satan, his demonic hosts, and fallen men. On the human front, the battle began when Adam and Eve rebelled against God in Eden. Through the centuries since then, men have shaken their fists in defiance at God. And though the folly of fighting Him is self-evident, that does not stop each succeeding generation from trying. Solomon well expressed the hopelessness of fighting God when he wrote, “There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.” (Prov. 21:30). Though sinful men often hail those who fight against God as wise, in reality they are fools. True wisdom lies in being on God’s side. Introduction to Chap.12.

History is strewn with the wreckage of the broken lives of those foolish enough to fight God. Some Examples – Friedrich Nietzsche, Sinclair Lewis (Nobel Prize winner 1930), Ernest Hemingway In biblical times, – Pharaoh (in Exodus), Sihon of the Amorites, Og of Bashan,... Every one of the kings of Israel, and many of those of Judah, opposed God. The result was the destruction of the northern kingdom by Assyria and the southern kingdom by Babylon. Introduction to Chap.12.

In the New Testament era one family of rulers stands out in the battle against God: the Herods. Herod the Great was a particularly bloodthirsty ruler. He executed one of his wives, her mother, and three of his sons. Most barbaric of all was Herod’s slaughter of all the innocent young male children near Bethlehem (Matt. 2:16) The Herod the king of this chapter was Herod Agrippa I, the grandson of Herod the Great. Three reasons for not fighting God stand out in Acts 12: 1.God’s power cannot be contested, 2.His punishment cannot be avoided, 3.His purposes cannot be frustrated. Introduction to Chap.12.

1. It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. The Herod the king of this chapter was Herod Agrippa I, who reigned from A.D. 37 to A.D. 44. He was the grandson of Herod the Great, who had murdered his father, Aristobulus. 2. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. 3. When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Because of his tenuous relationship with Rome, it was imperative that he maintain the loyalty of his Jewish subjects. Peter’s Arrest (12:1-4)

One way to favor with the resident Jewish authorities was to persecute the hated sect of the Christians, especially the apostles. Accordingly, about the time of the famine mentioned in chapter 11, Agrippa laid hands on some who belonged to the church in order to mistreat them. James became the first of the apostles to suffer martyrdom. 4. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. These squads, consisting of four soldiers each, rotated the watch on Peter. At any given time, two were in the cell with him, chained to him, and two more were stationed outside the cell door. Peter’s Arrest (12:1-4)

5. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. While Peter was kept in the prison, the church responded as they usually did when facing persecution: prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God. They knew the truth James was later to express, that “the effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much” (James 5:16). Herod thought he had the situation well in hand. God had other plans, however. 6. The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains; and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison. Despite his appalling circumstances, Peter was sound asleep. How? All your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). God’s Power Cannot be Contested (12:5-19)

Our sleeping pill and tranquilizer saturated society could take a lesson from Peter on how to trust God. 7. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists. In Herod’s plans to curry favor with the Jewish people there was a major, fatal flaw – he neglected to consider what God might do. God had more ministry for Peter and did not want him executed yet. Not even the brilliant light that shone in the cell aroused him. Finally, the angel struck Peter’s side and roused him, saying, “Get up quickly.” 8. Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him. 9. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. Peter obediently went out of the cell after the angel and continued to follow him. Still groggy, however, he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. God’s Power Cannot be Contested (12:5-19)

10. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him. Having seen Peter out of the cell and then out of the prison and safely away, immediately the angel departed from him. 11. Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating." 12. When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. It suddenly dawned on Peter that it was not wise for a well-known, easily recognizable escaped prisoner to remain standing there in the street. The house of Mary, the mother of Peter’s companion John Mark, was where many of the believers were gathered together praying for Peter’s release. God’s Power Cannot be Contested (12:5-19)

13. Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14. When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!" 15. "You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, "It must be his angel." Despite her insistence, they still were not ready to accept the fact that God had answered their prayers. If Rhoda had not taken leave of her senses, then perhaps what she had heard was Peter’s angel, someone suggested. In Jewish thought, each person had a guardian angel who could assume the form of that person. Meanwhile, the real Peter was left in an awkward and dangerous position. 16. But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. God’s Power Cannot be Contested (12:5-19)

17. Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell James and the brothers about this," he said, and then he left for another place. The noise made by the overjoyed believers threatened to do what Peter’s knocking had not: to arouse the neighbors and get Peter recaptured. Peter quickly told the amazing story of his escape, which no doubt greatly encouraged his listeners. Peter then commanded them to report the news to James (not the martyred apostle but the Lord’s brother, Matt. 13:55) He didn’t want to put all his fellow believers in jeopardy. Regardless of where he went, Peter fades from the scene as far as the record of Acts is concerned. Apart from his brief appearance at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15), this is the last we see of Peter. God’s Power Cannot be Contested (12:5-19)

18. In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19. After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there a while. Peter’s sudden, mysterious disappearance from a securely guarded cell caused an uproar among the guard force. They frantically turned the prison upside down searching for him, since they knew all too well what fate awaited a soldier who lost a prisoner. His plan had blown up in his face, and he needed a vacation to pull himself together. Unfortunately for him, he still failed to learn that he could not fight God. That mistake, which cost him Peter and his prestige with the Jews, was shortly to cost him his life. God’s Power Cannot be Contested (12:5-19)
