3 Brown Swiss Switzerland, 3 rd most numerous breed in U.S., 2 nd in lbs. milk / cow in the U.S.; Heat tolerant, Gaining in popularity in South America. 2 nd most numerous worldwide!

4 Guernsey Isle of Guernsey; in 1930 was 1/3 of cows in Minnesota; low milk production, lack vigor; breed is disappearing

5 Guernsey Only 27,000 left in the U.S. and not found in large numbers in other countries.

6 Holstein Holland; most milk per cow; most popular worldwide; has problems with fertility, calving difficulty, stillbirths, metabolic problems. About 5000 young sires are progeny tested each year worldwide.

8 Jersey Isle of Jersey; 2 nd most popular in U.S; highest % fat and protein in milk; Growing breed; Small mature size. 4 th most popular in the world with significant numbers in U.S. Denmark, New Zealand, and Australia.

9 Milking Shorthorn England; numbers are decreasing; low production. Have imported genetics from Red and White Holstein, Illawara, and Scandinavian Red

10 Red and White Mostly Red and White Holstein but allows in other breeds as long as red. More of a registry rather than a breed. Started in 1965 in U.S.

11 Illawarra Maybe 15% of cows in Australia and New Zealand; Created by combining the Ayrshire and Milking Shorthorn.

12 Dutch Belted First brought to America by Barnum and Bailey for the Circus. Little value for meat or milk.

13 Norwegian Red Norway; All breeds combined after WWII (a lot of Ayrshire). High selection for fertility and health traits.

14 Swedish Red and White Combining with the Danish Red and Finnish Ayrshire to make Nordic Red. Popular for crossbreeding with Holsteins

15 Montbeliarde France; 2 nd most popular breed in France; healthy and fertile; average milk production.

16 Montbeliarde Being used by U of MN for crossbreeding.

17 Normande France; heavier muscled than most dairy breeds; Probably the best breed for health, fertility, and longevity but is lower in milk production.

20 Water Buffalo Supply 15% of the world’s milk. Do not cross with other dairy species.
