Romeo and Juliet Project How does suicide from teenage heartbreak affect the lives of American teens today? By Connor Fredrick and Kody Christensen

Theme Teenage heartbreak paired with other problems in a teens life, can cause serious depression, which can unfortunately lead to suicide. This theme is proven in Romeo and Juliet because Both Romeo and Juliet committed suicide because of heartbreak, and Juliet's mother actually died because of fainting from what may very well of been caused by heartbreak.

Research Question and Topic Our research question for this project was “How does suicide from teenage heartbreak affect the lives of American teens today?” This project is about suicide which is cause by depression which can be caused by teenage heartbreak.

Research In 2007, there were 218 suicides of people between the ages of 10 and 19. And even though the suicide rates have gone down, it's still the 2nd leading cause of death among teenagers. – This answers the research question because it affects teens, but more importantly, it could effect any teen. And it may be hard to tell if a teen is depressed or not, just by the way they act.

Research Most kids fail tests, go through breakups, and think about suicide. But, there is a certain number of kids that actually are on the edge, and finding out who those kids are and preventing the potential suicide victims would be very beneficial for the teenager as well as that teen's family. – This answers our research question because depression and suicide affect a majority of teenagers; more than you probably think. And heartbreak is one of those causes of depression.

How this relates to Romeo and Juliet "Ha, banishment? Be merciful, say "death"(3,3,12). Romeo said this, and it proves that he would rather be dead than have to live without Juliet. So in other word, his heartbreak, lead him to want to commit suicide. "I'll to the friar to know his remedy./If all else fail, myself have power to die"(3,5,243-244). Just like Romeo, Juliet is willing to kill herself because she can’t be with Romeo.

How this links to American teens today There are multiple different reasons for teenage suicide attempts in America, including heartbreak, and all come down to sad, depressing times in which the victim does not wish to continue. Teenagers don't always see the value of their life and may not think about the fact that suicide is final. Teens see suicide as a way to end their problems, not realizing that they are ending their lives.

Conclusion All in all, teenage heartbreak paired with other problems in a teens life, can cause serious depression, which can unfortunately lead to teenage suicide.

Conclusion So to answer our main question, suicide caused by depression, caused by heartbreak does effect the lives of American teens today, and it is more of a problem than most people think, and there are ways to stop it. So just be aware that any teen, and in fact most teens go through depression with heartbreak being one of the causes. This is proven in Romeo and Juliet.
