The Prompts: All arguments in some way, so don’t be deceived …take a position, make a decision, offer your opinion or solution, etc.

The Prompts: Will be a page long—read everything Will include in this order: “Directions” (the same for all) “Introduction” (background and helpful directing information about the issue to be addressed) “Assignment” (the prompt itself) “List of Sources”

Sample Prompt Assignments: “... take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies the claim that in the twenty-first century, the US is changing from being a ‘melting pot’ toward a new paradigm in which diversity and individuality, rather than uniformity and conformity, are emphasized.”

Sample Prompt Assignments: “... examine the controversy surrounding various treatment options for depression and evaluate what factors need to be considered when treating depression.”

A “pro” source(s) A “con” source (s) A neutral source (s) A visual/non-prose source – chart, graph, table, cartoon, photograph

How to Use the Sources Your claims come out of the sources; you create the claims

How to Use the Sources Use at least the minimum number. You can use more. Never organize around the sources. Organize around your claims and use the sources to support.

How to Use the Sources Blend sources with your own ideas rather than letting the sources drive your arguments (paraphrase and cite, direct quote and cite, reference loosely and cite) Use examples OTHER than the sources as well Cite sources!!! -- (Source A) or (Radcliffe) - given to you in list of sources

Organizing Sometimes an argument organizational pattern will work, so use one. The most important thing is to ANSWER THE PROMPT. Let the prompt drive your organization.

Looking at a prompt Let’s read the background and prompt together. Take 15 minutes to read through the sources and develop a stance and a quick outline of how you would use the sources.
