5 Applying Your Research to Resume SKILLS: Jobs, internships, volunteer experience in similar roles Coursework and capstones experience in graduate school Computer and language skills Relevant technical training KNOWLEDGE OF & COMMITMENT TO THE FIELD, INDUSTRY, AND POPULATION: Jobs, internships, volunteer experience in similar roles Coursework and capstones experience in graduate school Research & publications related to the field Membership to professional groups

6 Level of Details Do you have enough detail? i.e. (undetailed) “Ran group counseling sessions for domestic violence clients” vs i.e. (detailed) “Ran group counseling sessions on a weekly basis for female victims of domestic violence to help address issues related to PTSD, anxiety and access to resources

7 Quantifying Ask yourself: Can you quantify and, if yes, will this enhance your resume? Anything you can count Monetary budgets and funds (i.e. saved, managed) People Products Time periods and efficiency improved i.e. “Ran group counseling groups on a weekly basis (up to 15 participants) for adolescent males (ages 12 to 16) on topics related to bullying and self- confidence”

8 Resume Content – What to exclude All experience not relevant to the position GPA (*with exceptions) “References upon request” Objective statement (*exceptions)

9 Resume Content – The Structure Name & Contact Information  Include address  Exclude headings “email” and “phone”  this is implied by the content  Formatting linearly across page will save space  Use the same heading on multiple pages of resume, as well as at the top of cover letter and list of references Education  If relevant to position, listed after name & contact information  Listed in reverse-chronological order (include expected graduation date)  Actual degree should be written out (i.e. Master of Public Administration)  Following education, list related coursework, research, group affiliations

10 Research & Publications  If relevant to job and/or field  If highlights technical skills or expertise related to position Relevant Experience  Listed after education unless more relevant to the position (i.e. 3 or more years of relevant professional experience related to the role)  Entitled “Relevant Experience” or “Experience” and includes jobs, internships, and volunteer positions  For each position, list name of organization (and department, if applicable), location, title, and dates  Most relevant bullets listed first (*refer to order of qualifications/skills listed on job description) Computer Skills &Language  In order of relevance (*check job description)  Indicate (honest!) level of proficiency in language (i.e. proficient, fluent, conversational) Misc  Professional association memberships (*join now!)  Relevant certifications and non-degree trainings

11 Resume Content – Language & Format Bullets  Allows resume to be read quickly  Content should be written concisely  Use action verbs to begin each bullet, ensuring a variety of verbs are used for one position  Incorporate language from job description  Use jargon associated with industry norms  Present tense for all current positions; past tense for previous positions Page Length  Rule of thumb: one page maximum!  More than one page if resume includes 7 to 10 years of relevant experience or if you have tons of relevant experience that will enhance your qualifications Fonts/Margi ns  Simple font (i.e. Times New Roman, Arial)  Font no less than 11 font  Margins between.5 and.75 inches
