9 Global Economics Enormous gaps between the rich and poor countries of the world- 25,000 die of hunger each day (most under 5). Some states are still subsistence based while others have moved beyond manufacturing to tertiary economies. Even within the wealthy or First World nations there are often areas of economic disparity within regions

10 Measuring Development Gross National Product (GNP) Measure of the total value of the officially recorded goods and services produced by the citizens and corporations of a country in a given year. Includes things produced inside and outside a country’s territory. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Measure of the total value of the officially recorded goods and services produced by the citizens and corporations of a country in a given year. Gross National Income (GNI) Measure of the monetary worth of what is produced within a country plus income received from investments outside the country. ** Most common measurement used today.

11 Concepts & Approaches Gross National Product-all goods & services produced by the economy per year both inside & outside the nation Gross Domestic Product-all goods & services produced by the economy per year with in the nation GNP or GDP does not reflect regional variations-it also doesn’t count the informal economy-black market, illegal drug trade & underground economy Developed Countries-(DCs) have high levels of industrialization, urbanization & standard of living Underdeveloped (UDCs) or Developing Countries are moving toward developed status-not as highly industrialized or urbanized with a lower standard of living

12 Measures of Development National Product per person-the total income divided by total population- Core (developed) about $25,000 while Periphery (developing) as low as $100. Occupational Structure of the Labor Force-% of workers in each section- high number in agriculture signals low development Consumption of Energy per Person- the greater the use of electricity-the higher the development Productivity per Worker-production of all goods divided by the total labor force

13 Measures of Development Transportation & Communication per person-railroad, road miles and airline connections per person as well as telephone, radio, television or computers per person. Consumption of Manufactured Metal per Person-the greater the amount of steel, iron, copper, aluminum etc. used per person Other Rates- –Literacy –Caloric intake –% of income spent on food –Amount of savings per person

20 Globalization Geographer Andrew Kirby explains that with globalization, we are living “not so much in a world without boundaries, or in a world without geography – but more literally, in a world, as opposed to a neighborhood or a region.”

21 What is Globalization? A set of processes that are: -increasing interactions -deepening relationships -heightening interdependence without regard to country borders. A set of outcomes that are: -unevenly distributed -varying across scales -differently manifested throughout the world.

22 The Backbone of Globalization is Trade Every CEO, reader or writer of a weblog or blog, protestor at a world trade meeting is participating in globalization. When we buy shoes, clothes or food that was produced overseas-we are participating in Globalization. Globalization occurs at many scales-macro- world wide and micro local with many differing impacts.

23 Pro-Globalization Argument The backbone of Globalization is trade. Economists-Keith Maskus argues-free trade raise the well-being of all countries since they specialize in what they produce most efficiently. Globalization promotes innovation and greater use of technology. It has helped to open many closed political systems It has broadened the horizons of many people world wide.

24 What are the Goals of Globalization? Depends on who you ask: World Economic Forum – an annual meeting held in Davos, Switzerland. Participants typically: - champion free trade - represent large corporations

25 World Social Forum Goal of the World Social Forum: Find alternatives to the decisions being made at the World Economic Forum. Participants are a network of anti-globalizationists.

26 Korean farmers demonstrate- December 2005 WTO Meeting in Hong Kong. World Trade Organization’s mission is to lower trade barriers and establish ground rules for international trade. The World Bank, officially known as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) both make loans to countries that need money for development projects

Almost all of our toys are made in China- (Guangdong Province is the world’s manufacturing mecca) but it would take an average Chinese assembly line worker 6 months to save enough to buy a Thomas the Tank Engine train set. China is expected to overtake the US as the world’s largest economy by 2020.

34 Anti-Globalization Argument Increased the gap between the rich and poor countries as well as the rich and poor within countries. Rich (core) countries impose their economic and cultural values on the periphery Increased use of resources-adverse environmental impact Eroded traditional methods of income and cultures Increased some intercultural animosities.
