A NALYZE THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF COMPUTERS ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND HOW THESE EFFECTS CAN BE MINIMIZED BY: CHRISTELLE PROULX

INTRODUCTION  Computers affect our environment negatively  Also technology in general  Industries rely on many power resources  To produce technology  To power technology  Dependent on fossil fuel

INTRODUCTION  Examples of negative effects on the environment  Pollution  Consuming resources  Waste  Disrupting ecology  Health hazards

INTRODUCTION  Discuss the negative effects  Into detail  Provide solutions  For each effect  How these effects can be minimized  What can we, as a society do

POLLUTION NEGATIVE EFFECTS Negative effects on the environment ■ Pollution contaminates our: ■ Air ■ Water ■ Ground ■ Other types of pollution ■ Heat ■ Noise

POLLUTION NEGATIVE EFFECTS Pollution is caused:  By producing and using technology Facts  Health costs caused by air pollutants  $40 to 50$ billion years  Estimated 50,000 to 120,000 premature deaths  Associated with exposure to air pollutants

CONSUMING RESOURCES NEGATIVE EFFECTS  Many resources use to produce technology  To construct computers manufacturer use:  Fossil fuel, includes coal, oil, gas, diesel fuel and natural gas  Fossil fuel is also used to generate electricity  To operate technology, such as computers or lights  Renewable resources are use as well

CONSUMING RESOURCES NEGATIVE EFFECTS  To construct an average computer  Requires 240 kg of fossil fuel  22 kg of chemicals  1,500 kg of water  Fossil fuel emits common air pollutants  Including carbon oxide, methane, particulate matter and so on

WASTE NEGATIVE EFFECT  Manufacturing plants produce waste  Computer and electronic parts get thrown out  When is fall apart or is outdated  This is called “techno trash”  Electronics contain hazardous materials  Unsafe for the environment

WASTE NEGATIVE EFFECT  Material usually get disposed with regular trash  Materials in electronics, not biodegradable  Materials can be toxic  If improperly disposed  Toxins can leak into the ground  Contaminate water and ground

DISRUPTING ECOLOGY NEGATIVE EFFECTS  Technology keeps evolving  Factories are built  To produce technology  By building factories  We disrupt the land, where animals live  Pollution can occur

DISRUPTING ECOLOGY NEGATIVE EFFECTS  Pollution can contaminate the food chain  Affect the environment’s natural cycles  Animals can contaminate other animals  Human may also get contaminated  Animals can die because of lack of food  Die of contamination

HEALTH HAZARDS NEGATIVE EFFECTS  Computers and technology contain toxic materials  Affect our health negatively  Can cause cancer and technology addiction  Technology addiction can result in health issues  Such as obesity and carpal tunnel syndrome  Neck pain and back pains from excessive use

HOW THESE EFFECTS CAN BE MINIMIZED

POLLUTION MINIMIZE EFFECTS  Using other types of resources  Some methods can improve air quality  Biodiesel  Bioethanol fuel  Solar energy  Pollution can result in many health issues

POLLUTION MINIMIZE EFFECTS  Environment Canada  Develop an Air Quality Health Index  Scale that helps you understand the air quality  How it might affect your health  Designed to protect your health  Limiting your outdoor activities  When air pollution levels are high

CONSUMING RESOURCES MINIMIZE EFFECT  CanmetEnergy is a Canadian leader in clean energy research  Over 450 scientists, engineers and technicians  Greatest energy and engineering organization  Working on clean research, development, demonstration and deployment  Work to develop more efficient and cleaner technologies  Clean fossil fuels, bio energy and renewables

WASTE MINIMIZE EFFECT  To minimize effects on the environment  Dispose of old technology properly  Manufacturers can help with that  Local colleges have dispose bins  City of Ottawa website  Locate which stores you can drop off certain items

DISRUPTING ECOLOGY MINIMIZE EFFECT  Minimize the risk of animals  Protecting them by local animal protection societies  If you have any concerns  Call local animal protection societies  They can provide more information  Locate the appropriate organization

HEALTH HAZARDS MINIMIZE EFFECT  First, dispose of technology properly  Toxins leak into the ground  Contaminates the ground, which affects us  Second, reduce time spent on computers  Take break frequently  Rest your hands properly on the keyboard

CONCLUSION  Discussed negative effects of computers on the environment  We know that:  Most materials from computer are toxic  Toxins can leak into the ground  Contaminate our ground  If not disposed of properly

CONCLUSION  If the ground gets contaminated  It can harm humans and animals  Toxins contaminate our air, ground and water  If animals get contaminated  Other animals or humans can, as well  It’s basically a cycle

CONCLUSION  Toxins can cause serious health issues  Manufacturers use fossil fuel to produce and operate technology  Fossil fuel creates pollution  Other resources are available that improve air quality  Technology surrounds us and is always evolving  This leads to improper disposal of old technology

CONCLUSION  This can lead to contamination  Air, water and ground  It’s quite easy to find location  To drop off old technology  Search the web and answers will come  Let’s all try to each make a difference
