How to be an Engaged Council Member

Tips for Being an Engaged Council Member Tip 1: Share your views –Focus on problem solving –Think carefully about the words you use –Respect people’s privacy; don’t use names when sharing someone else’s story Tip 2: Draw on your communication skills –Keep an open mind –Listen to understand, don’t listen to hear You need to understand what people are actually trying to say, not what you think they should say –Be aware; share the speaking time with everyone who wants to contribute –Be respectful in your communication style

Tips for Being an Engaged Council Member Tip 3: Ask questions –Ask clarifying questions to make sure you understand what was said –Ask for definitions of anything you don’t understand: medical terms, abbreviations, etc. –Ask for more details when necessary Tip 4: Be ready for disagreements –Describe your point of view in terms of your opinion rather than a fact or truth for everyone. Not everyone will share your point of view –Ask for more background when someone says change is not possible What has been tried? What was the outcome? Why did that happen?

Sharing Your Story Sharing your story can be a powerful way to help others get to know you and your family. You may want to share your story with staff or other residents and family members when: –First come to the facility –Attend update meetings with staff and administration –Meet with new staff –Meet with new residents or families of new residents

Thank You for Being Part of Our Resident and Family Council!
