People may choose a particular career because: they have a particular skill or talent for the job (for example, a footballer) friends or family members recommended it they have done their own research and decided that it is the best career for them.

Think carefully about what is important to you now, and what you may need to think about in the future. Some possible answers are given on the following slides.

For example: will you need to achieve specific grades at Level 2? which post-16 qualifications (if any) will you need? will you need to go to sixth form college or university?

How often do vacancies come up? Is the work seasonal or are jobs available all year round? Will you need to move from your local area? Is this a growing or declining sector?

8. Lesson 3: Your personalised action plan7 Working conditions You should think about what the job role will involve. Will you be expected to work shifts (e.g. as a police officer or paramedic)? Will you be expected to work in a noisy environment (e.g. a factory)? Will you be working office hours (9am–5pm)? Will you need to work late at night or at weekends (e.g. retail work or restaurant work)? Will you have to work on bank holidays (e.g. a chef)?

Does the company or organisation have a clear structure for promotion? Will you need to complete further study (e.g. an accountant)? Are there opportunities for worldwide travel?
