3. Er… You have all had lessons about bullying before. Students have often ‘grumbled’ about having even MORE lessons about bullying at King Edward VII… …but as long as bullying persists (continues) then the lessons you have had in the past clearly have not worked.

4. What do we mean by ‘bullying’? Brainstorm what you think ‘bullying’ means, as a class. On your piece of paper, write down one thing that has happened to you (or that you have seen) that you felt was bullying, in your life so far. –This must be completely anonymous. No names, dates or places that could make you, the victim, or the perpetrator, identifiable.

5. Bullying is any repeated behaviour which causes harm to another person. – It does not have to be intentional. – It does not have to be visible. – The ‘harm’ could be physical or emotional.

6. What you see as ‘banter’ could very easily be causing someone extreme harm, without you realising. They may be laughing along with you on the outside, but screaming on the inside. “It was just a joke” is no excuse.

7. But first… If I cough without covering my mouth, what happens to the germs? Once my cold has spread to someone else, where does it go? Am I in control of the germs?

8. Cyberbullying is like a virus… Watch this clip…this clip Some of the lines in the clip will appear on the next few slides. In your books, write down what you think they mean. –Discuss this with the person next to you.

9. What does this mean? “…every text she sends exposes the virus to multiple people instantly”

10. What does this mean? “It is highly contagious and no-one is immune”

11. What does this mean? “Some individuals might suffer more greatly from its side effects”

12. What does this mean? “Carriers of the virus can be the least suspected of people and may even be unaware of their own infection”

13. What does this mean? “The effects of the virus can take hours or days before getting out of control”

14. What does this mean? “Causing serious damage to its victims”

15. What can we do about it? What are the two ‘Cs’ in the clip? –Courage. What does ‘courage’ mean? –Compassion. What does ‘compassion’ mean? Write down how courage can prevent cyberbullying Write down how compassion can prevent cyberbullying

16. Yes… But why does it happen? All bullying, including cyberbullying, happens for a reason*. Look at your sheet and finish off each of the sentences on the sheet. *that doesn’t make it OK!!

17. Why does it need to STOP? Answer the following questions… Cyberbullying in particular spreads very _______ It can happen without us _______ Once images and words are in cyberspace, they cannot be _______ Technology is really important to young people and they want to feel _______ All bullying can cause significant and lasting _______

18. Are you a cyberbully? You may not even realise… Look at the following questions and take a mental note of how many you say ‘yes’ to…

19. Have you ever… Signed on with someone else’s screen name? Ever ‘fraped’ someone?

20. Have you ever… Teased or frightened someone over IM, Facebook or Twitter?

21. Have you ever… Not told someone who you really are online or by text, telling them to “guess”?

22. Have you ever… Changed your profile in a way designed to embarrass or frighten someone?

23. Have you ever… Posted pictures or information about someone on a web site without their consent?

24. Have you ever… Created an internet poll, either over IM or on a web site, about someone without their consent?

25. Have you ever… Used information found online to follow, tease, embarrass or harass someone in person? Hey Gloria - I saw that post of you in the gym on facebook last night. That top makes you look pregnant!

26. Have you ever… Sent rude or scary things to someone, even if you were just joking?

27. Have you ever… Signed someone else up for something online without their permission?

28. Have you ever… Used someone else’s password for any reason without their permission?

29. Have you ever… Hacked into someone else’s computer or sent a virus to them?

30. Have you ever… Insulted someone in an interactive game room?

31. What does that mean? If you said ‘yes’ to any of those questions, then you have probably caused upset to somebody else. Crucially, you have no way of knowing how much upset you have caused. –What you see as a joke is deadly serious to someone else. –You have no control over what other people do to things that you post.

32. Once you post something online, it can be… …copied, and posted somewhere else. It may also be edited first. …forwarded without your knowledge to someone else. …posted somewhere very public. …saved on someone’s phone, computer, tablet etc, and used in the future. …cached; stored by the owner of a website, in their own personal hard drives.

33. And finally… Remember that we are collectively responsible for each other. Tell the person next to you how they could stop cyberbullying. –Remember the two Cs… Bullying is NOT ACCEPTABLE here, or anywhere else and WILL be dealt with. Here are some of the things you can do…

34. Speak out to the bullies and tell them that they are upsetting you. –Remember that they may not actually realise! Speak to your tutor. Speak to the Pastoral and Progress Leaders. Put a message in the ‘your questions, answered*’ box in the library. These will be dealt with… –…anonymously as long as there is enough information –…with your consent, if you leave a name *this box is for any questions that you have and would like an answer to, but don’t know who to ask, or just don’t want to ask publicly.
