5 Research Capability Researcher network through Monash Data Analytics Team Evidence Review Team Research fellows Analyse existing evidence on various topics or interventions. Use data to identify trends, test interventions, predict outcomes, note risk factors etc. Develop new knowledge/ information or draw existing knowledge together through a variety of research methods. Evaluate the impact of OHS and compensation intervention. Develop research projects in direct collaboration with our partners.

6 Evidence Review Hub The Evidence Review Hub sits at the forefront of research innovation. This team works closely with our partners to provide cutting edge updates on relevant topics or interventions. This work directly impacts policy and practice.

7 The Data Analytics Team The Data Analytics Team coordinates several databases holding vital information about health, recovery and compensation in Victoria. The team uses this data for innovative analytical projects that track trends and predict outcomes for our partners.

8 Research Translation Since its establishment, ISCRR’s objective has been to translate research findings to achieve ‘real world’ impact. Understanding the key findings and the implications for policy, practice and research is a critical part of the translation process.

9 Work Injury in Australia, 2013/14 Work is a major determinant of the health of society and of individuals. Public health efforts must include the prevention of work- related incidents and enhance worker health and wellbeing

10 Work Injury in Australia Common work-related conditions (back pain, MSK, neck pain) are 3 of the 5 leading causes of disability. –Among working age people, these conditions create the greatest burden of disability. Estimated to be 532,000 work related injuries in 2013/14 (one per minute). Being off work can lead to: –changes in physical and mental health –reduced labour force productivity –impacts on family and social relationships –reduced economic security of the worker –Long term, intergenerational effects

11 Cost of Work-Related Conditions $61.6 billion or 4.1% of GDP (2012/13) Average cost of a work-related accident = $116,600 Workers bear much of the cost, followed by community and employers Safe Work Australia (2015). Cost of work-related injury and disease, 2012-13

12 ISCRR work-related research activities A significant work health program with ongoing analysis of data from various projects to inform policy and practice. Research examining ways to prevent or decrease illness or disability and promote return to work Research into effective clinical models of care and pathways for accessing primary care and other services. –Compensation system enhancements to assist claimants through the process and to return to work –Research into tools and interventions to create safer workplaces and promote worker health and wellbeing

13 Major Projects – Safety Culture and Climate Work Health Improvement Networks (WIN) –Evaluation of integrated approaches to worker health, safety and wellbeing in Victoria using an action learning and continuous improvement model Workplace Safety Leading Indicators – OPM-MU –The development and testing of a tool to effectively measure leading indicators of safety performance Workplace Safety Culture and Climate Research Program –Research to define safety culture and climate and identify appropriate tools that can be used to measure and improve it. –Establish a Community of Practice engaged in the identification, innovation and implementation of improved practices in workplace safety culture and climate.
