SUMMARY QUESTION: What is the difference between an Amorphous solid and a Crystalline solid?

WATER PAGE 67 OF INB

ESSENTIAL QUESTION Why is water less dense as a solid then as a liquid?

WATER: Most abundant liquid on Earth Covers 75% of the Earth Makes up 70% - 90% of all living organisms.

STRUCTURE: Polar covalently bonded hydrogen and oxygen. Bent according to VSPER theory. Linked by hydrogen bonding. 4-8 molecules in a group of water

STRUCTURE: Hexagonal pattern formed in solid. Space created accounts for low density of ice. As ice melts the bonds are broken and fill the space between molecules.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES. Transparent, odorless, tasteless, and almost colorless. Any odor or taste is from impurities. Less dense as a solid < 0 o C @ 1 atm. Otherwise all the oceans would be ice. Gas > 100 o C @ 1 atm

QUESTIONS PAGE 66 1)Why is a water molecule polar? 2)Describe the arrangement of molecules in water, and ice. 3)Why does ice float? Why is this important? 4)Why is ice less dense then water?
