A policy pursued by Nixon with the USSR Balance of Power- a distribution of power to prevent any 1 nation from becoming too powerful “It will be a safer world, and a better world if we have a strong healthy U.S., Europe, Soviet Union,China… each balancing the other, not playing the one against the other”.

Arab-Israeli tension: U.S. support of Israel causes tension with Israel’s neighbors. Arab nations which control a major portion of the world’s oil, place an “embargo” on U.S. which causes an oil shortage in U.S. Shuttle Diplomacy: For 2 years, Kissinger shuttles between Israel, Egypt and Syria to try and negotiate an end to the hostilities between the nations due to the Yom Kippur War. *** Also to help end shortage here in U.S. Middle East: Lots of Issues.

Watergate Scandal

Watergate: The Main Events  Burglary- Democratic Committee HQ at the Watergate hotel is broken into by “plumbers” to install wire taps to listen in on members.  Investigation- 2 Washington Post reporters get info. That something happened. Scandal begins to “unravel”  Scandal- President begins to fire people. Forces some to resign. Nixon claims he did nothing wrong. However, he had taped everything in the White House. One tape reveals that he ordered a “cover up” of the investigation a few days after it had happened.  Impeachment?- Congress gets ready to remove the President according to the rules set by the constitution.  Resignation- the idea of a trial by the Senate causes Nixon to give up his office. He leaves office to VP Gerald Ford and flies home to California. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN8OfPc_aQ8

President Gerald Ford Nation needs “healing” He “pardons” Richard Nixon. What does this mean? - The former President could not be prosecuted for his part in Watergate scandal. Due to this action, the President lost trust of much of the American public. Loses the ‘76 election to Jimmy Carter.
