 By the end of today…  SWBAT explain the differences between Terrestrial planets and Jovian planets.

My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

 Key Point #1: There are two groups of planets. The Terrestrial planets are the “inner planets,” while the Jovian planets are the “outer planets.”

 Terrestrial Planets:  Mercury  Venus  Earth  Mars  Jovian Planets:  Jupiter  Saturn  Uranus  Neptune

 Key Point #2: The Terrestrial planets are small, dense, and have rocky surfaces. Pg. 63

 Key Point #3: The Jovian planets, or the “gas giants,” are much larger and less dense than the Terrestrial planets. They are also composed primarily out of gases. Pg. 71

 What does it mean for something to be less dense?  Why does it make sense that the Jovian planets are less dense?  How dense something is  how tightly packed its mass is  Jovians planets are made out of gas = less dense

 Discovered in 1930  After, realized that Pluto was very, very small.  Pluto has a weird orbit  Other larger objects around Pluto discovered  Exact definition of a “planet” voted on in 2006  Pluto declared a “dwarf planet” because it did not meet the criteria

 List two differences between the Terrestrial planets and the Jovian planets.
