Speed & Velocity Aim: How can we differentiate between speed and velocity?

Speed Scalar The change in distance occurring over time Distance Units: meters (m) Time Units: seconds (s)

Average Speed NOT ON YOUR REFERENCE TABLES!!! Used only when you have TWO Speeds!!!

Example #1 Usain Bolt is able to run 100m in 9.79 seconds. Calculate his speed

Example #2 On a trip to the Hamptons, you and your friends were able to drive at 70mph on the LIE. However, when you reached Montauk Highway, the traffic forced you to slow down to 30mph. The entire trip took three hours. Determine the average speed of the car

(Average) Velocity Vector – DIRECTION MATTERS! Change in displacement occurring over time Displacement Units: meters (m) Time Units: seconds (s)

Example #3 During skating drills a hockey player starts at one end of the rink and skates to the other end of the 60m rink. He then quickly turns around, skates in the opposite direction and stops at the center of the rink. All this occurs in 10 seconds. Determine the hockey player’s (a) average speed and (b) average velocity (a)(b) 60m

Example #4 A car heads east for 50 meters then turns north and travels another 50 meters in 25 seconds. Determine the car’s (a) average speed and (b) average velocity (a) (b) 50m

SUMMARY Describe Speed – How would you calculate it? Describe Velocity – How would you calculate it? How would you determine the average speed of a moving object?
