THE GUITAR

Tuning pegs Fingerboard and frets Sound hole or ‘rose’ Bridge

THE GUITAR Each string has as a tuning peg which is turned to tighten or slacken each string. The tighter the string is the higher the pitch of the note - the slacker the string is the lower the pitch.

THE GUITAR At the other end from the tuning pegs the strings go over the bridge before being attached to the guitar. The bridge raises the strings to the correct level so that they are a little distance above the fingerboard.

THE GUITAR In this picture you can see that the strings are raised just slightly above the fingerboard and the frets. If the strings are too high then they are difficult to press down - if they are too low they catch on the frets making a buzzing noise.

THE GUITAR In this picture you can see the 6 strings stretched over the fingerboard - Going across the fingerboard are raised metal bars called frets. The player uses different frets to get different notes on the guitar - the players presses the string down firmly over the fret to get a clear sound.

THE GUITAR This picture shows the end of the fingerboard (notice how close the frets are together!) and the sound hole or ‘rose’. The rose is often very ornate - with expensive woods used to make up the pattern - often you can see the maker’s label inside the guitar.
