3 The ability to solve right triangles using trig ratios is used in navigation, surveying, astronomy and measurement of distances. Line of Sight – the line from the eye of the observer to the object If the object being observed is above the horizontal, then the angle between the line of sight and the horizontal is called the angle of elevation. If the object is below the line horizontal it is called the angle of depression.

4 If the line of sight follows a physical object, such as an inclined plane or hillside, we use the term angle of inclination.

5 EX A giant redwood tree casts a shadow 452 ft long. Find the height of the tree if the angle of elevation is 12.3 degrees.

6 EX. Find the height of the building and the height of the flagpole in the picture below.

7 EX A 50-foot ladder leans against a building. If the base of the ladder is 7 ft from the base of the building, what is the angle formed by the ladder and the building?
