6 6 Multi-State Standard Setting Usually 2 national panels per test States are asked to nominate up to 6 panelists per test ETS selects balanced panel (avoid bias; provide diversity) Result is a recommended score Each state sets its own score

7 Test Regeneration ETS keeps content of all Praxis tests up-to-date and relevant States nominate teachers and teacher educators to serve on Test Development Standing Committees and on National Advisory Committees (NACs) Nevada had a long tradition of serving on these committees as well as on Multi-state Standard Setting Studies (MSSS) Tests are reviewed annually to determine revisions to test specifications or if regeneration is needed 7

8 Test items are classified and reviewed to determine if each item: 1)Measures the intended knowledge or skill 2)Tests important concepts or information 3)Reflects good and current teaching practices 4)Presents content that is free from bias against any person or group 8

9 Praxis English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Test Code #5362 National Advisory Committee (NAC) was convened November 14, 2014 Standard Setting held December 7-8 and 10-11, 2015 First administration will be September 2016 This test, as all other Praxis exams, will be reviewed on an annual basis to determine whether regeneration is needed. 9

13 About the ESOL test Designed to measure basic linguistic and pedagogical knowledge within the context of teaching ESOL in elementary or secondary schools ETS aligned test questions with the TESOL/NCATE Standards for the Recognition of Initial TESOL Programs in P-12 ESL Teacher Education, as developed by Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL) 13

14 About the ESOL test Developed in collaboration with Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Educator Preparation (CAEP) ETS works in collaboration with teacher educators, higher education content specialists, and accomplished practicing teachers to keep the test updated and representative of current standards 14

16 Technical Report Multistate Standard Setting Study (MSSS) was held in Princeton, NJ in December, 2015 41 Panelists from 24 states, Guam, & US Virgin Islands Experience as ESOL teacher or faculty who prepare them, and familiar with knowledge and skills required of beginning ESOL teacher Nevada was represented in the MSSS 16

18 Use of ESOL in other states 24 states and jurisdictions are using the prior version of the Praxis ESOL exam All are expected to approve adoption of the regenerated version Of the paperwork submitted to date, states are using the recommended study value of 69 out of a possible 110 raw-score points The scale score equivalent is 155 (100-200 scale) 18
