BY: CHLOË STAARGAARD & HALEY SENDER Overfishing!!! Because we really don’t want to kill the little Nemos…

Fishing is not only used as a food source, it is also a form of entertainment socially. This has created declines in many fish populations due to overfishing.

Why is it a problem? It has recently become a health fad to eat more fish. It is inexpensive to make dog and cat food from fish. People in Europe are worried about eating meat that may contain viruses so they are eating more fish for protein. The lost of fish, which other organisms prey on, could and probably will lead into the extinction of those species if something is not done to check this issue.

Overfishing Cycle

Other Causes Sport fishing Mussel harvesting Decline in water quality

About Overfishing Various federal and regional agencies oversee fishery management, most notably the New England Fishery Management Council. In order to manage overfishing, it needs to be recorded. One way to do this is by measuring the exploitation rate. Other factors, including pollution and habitat loss, also must be considered when determining overfishing. The process is not always accurate, however.

Methods to Prevent Overfishing Fishing banned within breeding waters Restrictions placed on age and number of fish caught in one fishing trip/season Any and all methods used to prevent overfishing require constant attention to each fish catch However, any methods used by agencies do not protect the fish species from loss of food, loss of habitat nor from disease.

Other Problems Pollution  Can deplete food source for fish  Can decrease reproduction  Can cause premature death of fish Overpredation  Marine mammals as well as sea birds prey on fish Repercussions of overfishing  Illegal fishing  Competition between US and other countries who do not have restrictions  Excess of the food source of fish
