To Kill A Mockingbird Theme: Social Inequality By: John Palmer

Atticus Finch Chapter 9 Page 100-101 Audience: Uncle Jack, (scout eavesdropped and was caught by Atticus) Context: Atticus was explaining to uncle Jack how he doesn’t want to let the town get the best of his kids after Francis called Atticus a Ni**er lover. Commentary: The town hates blacks and that reflects on Atticus’ kids  "Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a negro comes up, something I don't pretend to understand... I just hope Jem and Scout come to me for answers instead of listening to this town”

PAGE 94 Speaker Francis Audience Scout This was said because Francis heard that Atticus was defending a black person and wasn’t happy. He expressed his opinion maybe a little to openly though. Francis’s opinion on Atticus is due only to the fact that Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. Francis believes that being even this little associated makes him look bad.  If Uncle Atticus lets you run around with stray dog, that's his business, like Grandma says, so it ain’t your fault. I guess it ain’t your fault if Uncle Atticus is a ni**** lover besides, but I’m here to tell you it certainly does modify the rest of the family.

chapter 23 page 251 Seaker Atticus Audience Jem This was when Atticus was explain to Jem the social inequality within Maycomb. Jem still doesn’t quite understand. Jem thinks that “Folks are folks” and that that’s why some people don’t like blacks and others do. Atticus explains that the reason is only because Tom Robinson is black.  In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins chapter”

This connects to the book and my presentation because my theme is social inequality. In TKAM almost all families hate blacks and those who support are hated. They discriminate based on perspectives of other and what they hear and what is widely accepted. That is very common today and that is my connection.  Social Inequality is Still a huge deal today, as our country has always discriminated the new and unseen. For example in 1871 when the Irish first immigrated to the US the were discriminated against. And to this day women and gays are very discriminated against.
