Appositives and Appositive phrases ◦ Appositive Phrases/Appositives- and appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it. ◦ Ex- The insect, a cockroach, is crawling around my bedroom. ◦ The insect, a large cockroach, is crawling across my bedroom. ◦ The insect, a large cockroach with hairy legs, is crawling across my room. ◦ Ex: The insect, a large cockroach with hairy legs and two eyes, is crawling across my room.

Independent and Dependent Clauses ◦ An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought. ◦ A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought ◦ Independent Clause: Jade studied in the library for her spelling test. ◦ Dependent clause: When Jade studied in the library for her spelling test.

Compound and Complex Sentences Compound Sentences: ◦ sentence that contains at least two independent clauses. ◦ Compound sentences can be formed in three ways ◦ Using a coordinating conjunction FANBOYS (For, An, But, Or, Yet, So) to join main parts together ◦ You could use a semicolon ( ; ) ◦ EXAMPLES: ◦ "I shall call him Squishy, and he shall be mine, and he shall be my Squishy." ( Dory Finding Nemo, 2003) Complex sentences: ◦ A sentence tat contains at least one independent and dependent clause ◦ EXAMPLES: ◦ "George left when Sally arrived." ◦ The clause when Sally arrived is a dependent clause because it's preceded by the word when. ◦ when sally arrived cannot alone it is not a complete sentence it needs to be connected to an independent clause.

NOUNS ◦ Names a person, place, thing or idea ◦ Almost all nouns have a singular or plural form ◦ There are many types nouns such as abstract noun, concrete, Animate Noun, Inanimate Noun, Attributive Noun, Collective Noun, Common Noun and Proper Noun, Compound Noun, Count Noun and Mass Noun, and Denominal Noun ◦ Examples of Nouns: ◦ Noun: Building, school, soap, computer, spaghetti, hand, shampoo, etc. "Tomorrow we are eating spaghetti for dinner." ◦ Plural Nouns: buildings, soaps, plates, hands, cars, games. "Did you see how many buildings there was?" ◦ Abstract Noun: Love, hate, angry, sad, happy, confused, "I'm so mad at you!" ◦ Concrete noun: see, hear touch, smell, taste, "The girl could smell the trash from her room,"
