Metals Metalloids Non Metals The elements of the periodic table are generally separated into three distinct types of elements that share similar characteristics:1. Metals 2. Non Metals 3. Metalloids

Metals Non Metals Metalloids Have luster (shininess) Good conductors High Melt Point Malleable and ductile High density Tend to lose electrons No luster (dull surface) Poor conductors Low Melt Point Brittle (Not ductile) Low density Tend to gain electrons Contain characteristics of both metals and non metals

Metals Metalloids Non Metals o Each type of element is subdivided into smaller categories that define a group or family.

very reactive metals that do not occur freely in nature (are always bonded naturally) softer than most other metals can explode if they are exposed to water ALKALI METALS

very reactive not found free in nature ALKLINE EARTH METALS

ductile and malleable, and conduct electricity and heat iron, cobalt, and nickel, are the only elements known to produce a magnetic field. TRANSITION METALS

RARE EARTH ELEMENTS many are man-made Not commonly found on earth

OTHER METALS are solid, have a relatively high density. are opaque

METALLOIDS Semiconductors: can conduct better than non metals but worse than metals

NON-METALS exist in two of the three states of matter at room temperature: gases (such as oxygen) and solids (such as carbon). have no metallic luster, and do not reflect light.

HALOGENS "halogen" means "salt-former" and compounds containing halogens are called "salts"

NOBLE GASES do not bond with other elements easily
