The Amazing Periodic Table The Power of Careful Observation & Prediction Dmitri Mendeleev created the 1 st periodic table in the 1800’s

3 Major Classifications of Elements Metalloids or semi-metals Metals On the left hand side of the periodic table Includes the two rows at the bottom DOES not include Hydrogen Non-Metals Includes hydrogen

Properties of Metals On the Left side of the table Does not include hydrogen Solids at room temperature (except for Mercury) Shiny Ductile: can be made into wires Malleable: can be pounded & easily shaped, like knives and swords Most are silver/grey in color Conducts heat and electricity Will give up electrons to form cations Have less than 4 valence electrons

Properties of Non-metals On the right side of the periodic table Most are gases (H, He, Ne, etc.) Brittle, or break easily Dull texture Poor conductors of heat and electricity Will steal electrons to become anions Have more than 4 valence electrons Come in a variety of colors

Properties of Metalloids Also called semi-metals They are on the stairs in between the metals and non- metals They have a combination of both metallic and non- metallic properties –Ex: they are shiny but don’t conduct electricity Semiconductors – conduct electricity under certain circumstances (some used in computer technology)

The Periodic Cliques…. In your notes, you have one large, blank periodic table. For each of the following slides: Use your markers to color the groups Write the name of each group Write the charge of each group

Group 1A:The Alkali Metals Color: Pink Charge: +1 Info: Soft metals extremely reactive Can explode when mixed with water or hydrogen Open alkalimetal download

Group 2A:The Alkaline Earth Metals Color: Orange Charge: +2 Info: Soft metals Fairly reactive Can explode when mixed with water or hydrogen

Group:The Transition Metals Color: Green Charge: usually +1 to +4 Info: Used to make our coins, jewelry, wires, cars, etc. Can be mixed together to make alloys, like steel or brass

Group 7A:The Halogens Color: Brown Charge: -1 Info: Pretty reactive most are gases used as disinfectants

Group 8A:The Noble Gases Color: Highlighter Purple Charge: none Info: Not reactive Gases Used to fill light bulbs Every other element wants to be like them!
