3 Vector vs Scalar Vectors – Have direction and magnitude Ex: force, velocity, acceleration, displacement Scalar – Magnitude only Ex: time, area, volume

4 All about Vectors V1 + V2= Resultant You can add them in any order or subtract them using opposites You can multiply or divide it by a scalar quantity and still get a vector - later USE : – Pythagorean Theorem for Magnitude – SOH CAH TOA for direction

Warm Up A novice pilot sets a plane’s controls, thinking that the plane will fly 250 km/hr to the north. If the wind blows at 75 km/hr to the south east, what is the plane’s resultant velocity? Use graphical techniques

8 Lab We will practice with a projectile launched horizontally. We will practice with the two equations needed to solve for the horizontal velocity. We are working ahead in regards to equations so ask questions if needed. Turn to page 98. We will review the example as a class. You job is to launch a penny with horizontal velocity off of your desk. You will be able to measure the vertical and horizontal distance. You know acceleration due to gravity. You will solve for velocity. Complete this task for 5 different velocities. Since you are solving for velocity the only way to tell it you are changing velocity is by changing the horizontal distance. So start off soft and then push the penny harder and harder off of the desk. Complete the data table Delta y (should not change) Delta x (will change with a harder push) A= acceleration always the same constant Vi=vx= this is where you solve
