Becoming a World Power Imperialism

American Interest’s Change Post Civil War - Internal: reconstruction, building industries, and settling the West. 1880s - External: Competition militarily & economically, and feeling of cultural superiority.

What is Imperialism When a strong nation has control politically and economically over a weaker nation. What is a protectorate? –When the Imperial/strong nation doesn’t change the local rulers, and provides protection against potential threats.

Reasons for Expansion European countries were expanding overseas, so to keep up the U.S. felt like they needed to as well. To keep the economy strong. Find new markets. Trade opportunities without tariffs.

Feeling of Superiority Supporters of Social Darwinism figured that it applied to nations, and that only the strongest would survive. John Fiske & Anglo-Saxonism- English speaking nations had superior character, ideas, and systems of government. –It was the United States destiny to first expand westward, and now overseas in order to spread its civilization to others.

Building a Modern Navy Three international crises show the need for military bases around the world. Fear that European countries could interfere with U.S. trade with foreign markets. Mahan’s book The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1783.
