WILL THE WINNERS LOSE? Landfill Test Review

Objective: Be the team with the most points. When your team answers a question correctly, you can choose to take a card (or not!) The cards can have positive or negative consequences (i.e. you can gain or lose points). When other teams are answering a question, stay silent and consider their question. The purpose is to review.

True or False: Trash is sorted into recyclables, non-recyclables, hazardous & non-hazardous waste. FALSE. IT IS NOT SORTED AT ALL.

Which layer is on the bottom of a landfill and why? CLAY B/C ITS IMPERMEABLE TO WATER

Define leachate. Rainfall that seeps throughout a landfill and picks up contaminants

How has recycling changed since 1960? IT HAS INCREASED

Describe 2 sources of municipal solid waste. HOMES, BUSINESSES, & SCHOOLS.

How many pounds of trash does the average person produce per day? 4.5 LBS.

What percentage of our trash goes to a landfill? 55%

List 1 source of non-controlled waste. AGRICULTURE OR MINES

How do we define inert waste? SUBSTANCE THAT DOES NOT DECOMPOSE

Describe how leachate is collected in a landfill. THROUGH PIPES THAT FUNNEL LEACHATE INTO A RETENTION POND

List 3 things that can be found in leachate (must have all 3). HEAVY METALS, BACTERIA, PESTICIDES, NITROGEN, ORGANIC MATTER

List 2 problems associated with landfills. CONTAMINATION OF SOIL/WATER, METHANE RELEASE, SINKING, PUBLIC OPINION, LOCATION DUE TO EARTHQUAKES & LANDSLIDES

Which landfill layer soaks up leachate and sends it to the pipes? SAND/GRAVEL

What is the most effective strategy for managing waste? REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WASTE.

List 1 pro and 1 con for waste to energy. PRO= GET ELECTRICITY; LESS WASTE GOING INTO LANDFILL CON= TOXIC ASH & AIR POLLUTION.

How has waste generation changed since 1960 (when we started recycling)? IT HAS INCREASED

What is the correct order for the 3 R’s? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Explain two differences between aerobic & anaerobic digestion. AEROBIC= HAS O2, MAKES ONLY FERTILIZER (METHANE LOST TO AIR) ANAEROBIC= NO O2, MAKES FERTILIZER & ENERGY FROM METHANE CAPTURE.

Which is more efficient: aerobic or anaerobic digestion? Explain why. ANAEROBIC BECAUSE METHANE IS CAPTURED FOR ENERGY

What is the most effective use of a sanitary landfill? RECOVERY AND USE OF CH4.

Why is open burning the least effective strategy? POLLUTION & GLOBAL WARMING

What is the final cap made of? SOIL & PLANTS

What is plastic made from? OIL

Why is recycling not on the top of the 3 R pyramid? Because it uses energy to make the recycled products= more pollution

Explain the difference between bio-degradable and non- biodegradable. Bio-degradable substances decompose naturally in a reasonable amount of time.

What substances are used for composting? ORGANIC WASTE (FOOD SCRAPS; YARD TRIMMINGS)

What do you get out of composting? FERTILIZER

What products are recycled the most? CAR BATTERIES

What products are recycled the least? PLASTIC BOTTLES

What percentage of ocean trash is plastic? 80%
