Lystek - The Company Low Temperature Chemical Hydrolysis technology installed after dewatering, easy to install bac end solution Produces a hydrolyzed product with three uses: - Class A EQ (US) and CFIA registered (Canada) fertilizer - Digester Enhancement - Carbon Source for BNR Ownership: Management and RW Tomlinson Ltd, Ottawa, Ontario (> 1000 employees,> $ 500 million annual sales, able to provide guarantees

How Does the Lystek Process Work? Processing time: 45 minutes; semi- batch continuous process Processes 3%-30% biosolids & utilizes a combination of: - heat - low pressure steam (7- 8 psi), low temperature 160 -165 o F (operates at ambient pressure) - high shear mixing and - pH adjustment (9.5-10) using alkali Produces a high solids (15%-19%) hydrolyzed liquid product, pumpable, using conventional pumps

Lystek Process

Applications of the Technology Lystek processes digested or undigested biosolids and source separated organics Homogeneous liquefied product has viscosity below 5,000 cP for easy handling, storage, transportation and application Multi-purpose product: - WWTP process optimization, re-feeding of the product into:  Anaerobic digester  BNR - Class A EQ quality, nutrient rich (NPK 4:3:2) liquid fertilizer for beneficial use in agriculture and horticulture

Technical / Scientific Basis Process conditions cause cell disintegration and hydrolysis of complex organic molecules into simpler & rapidly biodegradable compounds Hydrolyzed product provides readily available organics for anaerobic digester and carbon source for BNR system The product contains >30% of the soluble and readily biodegradable COD and VFAs Lystek process applies to the digested biosolids that contain recalcitrant residual organics and makes them more amenable to biodegradation

Small System Footprint

Uses of the Lystek Process/Product - Re-feeding anaerobic digester for enhanced performance:  Extra material breakdown: >20%  Extra biogas yield: up to 50% - Re-feeding BNR system  Cost effective alternative carbon source - Class A EQ (US) and CFIA registered (Canada) fertilizer  Liquid, high solids, pumpable, storage in covered tanks/ lagoons, enclosed tanker, sub surface injection

Performance and Benefits of Technology Back end solution - easy to install, small footprint, modular On site and off site solutions Low investment Low operation and maintenance costs Optimized odor control: waste and product not exposed to open air Dust free, clean operations

Pilot tests – Recycling to WWTP Processes City of Guelph – Full-scale pilot study result: Increase in >40% biogas and >25% solids reduction by recycling Lystek product to a test digesters compared to the control digester without Lystek feed. Biodegradability of Lystek biosolids itself is in the range of 65-70%. 14 Pilot Tests – Recycling to WWTP Processes St Marys: Studies indicated that an integrated BNR-AD-Lystek system significantly improves effluent quality and reduces overall biosolids generation by >25%. Lab tests indicated that the denitrification rates of Lystek biosolids were similar to acetic acid as carbon source.

Laboratory Tests Los Angeles County: Carried out at University of Western Ontario - compared to the raw sludge only, biogas improvement by raw sludge + Lystek processed digested sludge produced >30% more methane with a potential to further increase to >40%. Lystek biosolids were 65% biodegradable. New York– Carried out at Manhattan College - residual volatile solids in the anaerobically digested biosolids are >50% more biodegradable after Lystek process. Study will continue with a different plant biosolids.

Laboratory Test New York – carried out at the Manhattan College - on potential of Lystek biosolids as a carbon source in BNR system using different sludges. 17 What the Technology Needs to Move Forward A real scale demonstration Project in the US ideally at a WWTP which: - Currently have mesophilic digesters operating below 55% volatile solids reduction - Want to increase volatile solids reduction above 60-65% and/or increase biogas production by 30-50% - Currently have BNR, use a chemical carbon source and would like to reduce the chemical cost - Currently have, or are planning to install, dewatering equipment after the anaerobic digesters

Additional benefits - Production of a Class A, high solids liquid product that can reduce land application costs, eliminate odor complaints during processing, transportation, storage and land application - The project would benefit from a financially strong technology/ service provider that offers performance guarantees

Thank You and Q & A’s
