9. An established hub for fertilizers production One of the largest fertilizer factory Achema in the Baltic region operates in the city. The production started in 1965. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia and Latvia became main export markets. 2011. Achema completed combined heat and power network. Co- generation gas power plant of 47 MW came into operation. The factory was privatized in 1994. Since then it was modernised and expanded.
