The proportion of oxygen increased as plants photosynthesised. The main gases in today’s atmosphere are nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), argon (~1%) and carbon dioxide (~0.03%). The proportion of carbon dioxide is now increasing due to the burning of fossil fuels.
